SMETHPORT — Sheffield’s track and field teams closed out their regular season with their third meet of the week, Friday at the Northern Tier League (NTL) Invitational at Smethport High School.

“Despite a grueling and emotional week, the team produced strong performances, with several place winners in various events,” said Sheffield coach Jason Snell. “The teams showed great resilience in the face of key absences and shoved through with the next-man-up mentality. The emotions went from happy tears so high Monday to sad tears Thursday and Friday, knowing the end was near.

“Lots of underclassmen stepped up to fill in events and some of them placed,” added Snell. “Also thought it was a pretty neat highlight of the night having three boys javelin throwers over the 130-foot mark and placing 2-3-4.

“The emotions train kept on a rollin’ Friday as many knew that was their last time ever competing in the orange and black,” Snell continued. “For the rest, the District 9 qualifiers and provisionals that will compete and be announced later this week, (they) await the same fate as they compete for an opportunity for the state championships. It will be really nice to have a full week of practice under our belts this week before Friday’s District 9 Championships.”

“Three meets in a week was too much,” said Coach Snell. “What those kids emotionally went through this week, I don’t know how they had anything left for Friday, but endurance-wise, most of us were just so happy to get back to the bus and finally sit down Friday about 10:30.”

The District 9 Championships will begin on Friday afternoon at Brookville High School.

Starting at $3.50/week.
