Manning throws no-hitter for Eagles

LAWRENCE PARK — Unhittable.

Youngsville’s David Manning needed just 74 pitches to twirl a complete game no-hitter during Youngsville’s 3-0 victory over Iroquois on Monday.

Three Youngsville fielding errors were all that kept Manning from a perfect game as the junior struck out eight and walked zero.

“David filled up the zone and got ahead early all night,” said Youngsville coach Eddie Dorunda. “He was efficient and pitched like he’s capable. (Catcher) James (Johnson) had him mixing it up and they worked well together.”

While Manning was in firm control on the mound, the Eagles (9-6) did just enough at the plate to walk away with their ninth victory of the season.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Braydon Baker led off with a single and Bryce Spinks reached with a one-out walk. Sophomore Josh Pikna came to the plate next and grounded out to second, but the ball was placed well enough to score Baker and give Youngsville a 1-0 lead.

The Youngsville lead was doubled in the fifth inning after Cole Johnson reached on an error and walks from James Johnson and Baker loaded the bases. With one out, Dylan DePasquale hit a comebacker to Iroquois pitcher Cole Bennett who chose to throw to first rather than home for the second out. That allowed Cole Johnson to score and make it a 2-0 game.

Manning did his part to provide himself some insurance in the seventh inning reaching on a hard-hit single and eventually scoring on Baker’s two-out hit to conclude the scoring.

Manning took care of the rest, using the strikeout as well as great defensive plays from outfielders Aaden Patch, Logan King and Spinks to preserve the shutout.

“If it wasn’t for our outstanding fielding in the outfield, we would have been in trouble tonight,” said Dorunda. “I’m hoping tomorrow we can get the bats going and make Northwestern field the ball. It’s a week before the playoffs and it will be key for the guys to get their confidence back at the plate.”

Baker was the only Youngsville player with multiple hits on Monday while Cole Johnson, James Johnson and Manning had the other hits.

The Eagles are scheduled to play their final home game in team history on Tuesday when they welcome the Northwestern Wildcats for a non-region outing at Davis Street Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

PREP DOWNS WINLESS WARREN

ERIE — Cathedral Prep scored seven third-inning runs en route to a 14-4 five-inning baseball win over Warren on Monday at Mercyhurst University.

Prep (13-5 overall and 10-3 in Region 6) led 2-0 after two innings before scoring seven runs in the third and five more in the fourth to 10-run Warren, which is 0-16 overall and 0-12 in region.

Andrew Costello had a triple, home run, and four RBIs for Prep, which won its third straight game by a combined 52-18. Teammate Davin Friedman added a homer and three RBIs and AJ Soriano was 3-for-3.

Warren had a four-run fourth inning with hits from six Dragons, including Bradey Chase, Carter Cochran, Eli Snyder, Felix Valencia, and Tage Wyman to start the inning, and Brady Shene added a one-out single before a double play ended the threat. Those were all of Warren’s six hits. The Dragons struck out just once in the game.
