Eagles claw their way back for win over Oswayo Valley

YOUNGSVILLE — Youngsville fell behind early but clawed its way back for a 10-8 victory over Oswayo Valley in the opening game of a doubleheader Thursday at Davis Street Field.
Playing its third and fourth games in three days, Youngsville entered down its two best starting pitching options. Braydon Baker got the call to start and pitched six innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) on just five hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks.
Oswayo Valley shortstop Ian Goode started the scoring on Thursday with an RBI single in the opening at-bat and a second Green Wave run would score on an error. Youngsville got one of the runs back in the bottom of the first as Cole Johnson singled, stole second and third and eventually scored on a passed ball.
The next five runs of the game would be scored by the Green Wave as Oswayo built a 7-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third. There, Aaden Patch led off the inning with a single, James Johnson walked and Cole Johnson singled to load the bases with nobody out.
After a fielder’s choice, Talon Mesel laid down an RBI bunt single to score James Johnson and make it 7-2. Baker was up next and was able to reach on an error that plated both David Manning and Mesel to cut the lead to three.
Before the inning was over, Bryce Spinks delivered an RBI single and Patch drew a bases-loaded walk that made it 7-6 Oswayo through three innings.
That score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when Youngsville got creative to take its first lead of the game. First, Baker scored on a passed ball to tie the game and soon Spinks found himself on third base as the go-ahead run.
Patch drew another walk and courtesy runner Logan King was entered into the game. King took an intentionally large lead at first base, daring for a pickoff throw which he soon got. King was eventually tagged out, but before he was, Spinks sprinted home from third for the go-ahead score and an 8-7 lead.
The Eagles got some insurance in the bottom of the sixth when Mesel hit an RBI single and later scored a run to make it 10-7 with an inning to play.
Baker reached his pitch limit and Mesel entered the game in relief, giving up a leadoff single to Goode before the Oswayo shortstop was eventually caught stealing for the first out of the inning. After a walk, Baker caught a sizzling line drive at short for the second out and Youngsville was just one out from victory.
Three consecutive walks followed that made it 10-8 and placed the tying run in scoring position. Eagles coach Eddie Dorunda called on Cole Johnson to get the last out and the senior delivered a strikeout to end the game.
Talon Mesel and Cole Johnson each had three hits in the Youngsville victory.
CORRY DOWNS IKE
CORRY — Kamdyn Moore pitched, batted and ran Corry to a 10-0 baseball victory over Eisenhower on Thursday.
In addition to pitching three scoreless innings, the right-hander yielded only two hits, struck out seven and didn’t issue a walk. He also helped his own cause with three hits, including a triple, drove in a run and stole three bases.
Griffin Williams was the losing pitcher, while Knights’ teammates Jarius Casey and Caleb Jakubczak each had a hit.
Eisenhower is back in action today when it travels to Iroquois for a region game. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
