Youngsville topples Eisenhower

RUSSELL — After nearly two weeks without a game, the Youngsville Eagles came out swinging big during a 14-1 Region 4 victory over the Eisenhower Knights on Wednesday at Werner Park.

The weather stayed dry and just warm enough for the Eagles to play for the first time in 12 days. Youngsville (2-2) scored seven runs in the top of the first inning and was never seriously threatened from there.

James Johnson led off the game with a single and moved to third on a double from David Manning. Cole Johnson followed with a two-run single that put the Eagles up for good.

Cole Johnson later stole home to make it 3-0 and a returning Braydon Baker delivered an RBI hit to score Talon Mesel and push the lead to four. Baker later scored on an overthrow and Dylan DePasquale did the same after reaching base with a double down the right field line.

Before the inning was over, Carsyn Branstrom — who had reached on a walk — scored on James Johnson’s second hit of the inning to make it a seven-run game.

Eisenhower was able to get two hits off Youngsville starter Manning in the bottom of the first as Wyatt Neall and Jarius Casey hit singles. Both runners were stranded after Manning’s third strikeout of the inning.

The Eagles added an eighth run in the second when Cole Johnson led off with a double and scored on an overthrow. Four more runs came in the top of the third as Baker collected his second and third RBIs of the game and Josh Pikna delivered an RBI double before scoring himself on an error.

Eisenhower got on the board in the bottom of the third when Griffin Williams singled with two men out. Caleb Jakubczak extended the inning with a single and Williams scored on Casey’s RBI hit that made it 12-1 after three innings.

Youngsville tacked on an additional run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to extend the advantage to 14-1. James Johnson walked, stole a base and scored on Manning’s RBI hit in the fourth and Baker scored on an RBI infield hit from Bryce Spinks in the fifth.

Needing four runs to extend the game, Eisenhower was threatening to score additional runs in the fifth. However, Pikna caught a fly ball on the infield and raced to first to double off the runner and end the game in five innings with an unassisted double play.

Cole Johnson was 4 for 4 for the winners with Manning and Baker adding three hits apiece. Manning struck out seven in three innings for the win on the mound. Jakubczak and Casey accounted for four of the Knights’ six hits in defeat.

Youngsville returns to action on Monday when it travels to Mercyhurst Prep. Friday’s originally scheduled game with Jamestown (Pennsylvania) was postponed so that the Muskies could play a region contest. Eisenhower is scheduled to visit Northwestern on Thursday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
