Warren boys tennis qualifies for D10 final with win

ERIE — Warren’s boys tennis team punched its ticket to the District 10 3A team championship with a 3-2 win on Wednesday over Erie High.

“This was great tennis the whole way down,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino, whose Dragons are 10-2 overall and finish with a 5-2 Region 2 record. Erie finishes 4-3 in the region. “Every match from first singles to second doubles was competitive and fun to watch.”

At first singles, Adam Strandburg took on the defending D10 singles champion John Sinnott. Sinnott was ahead 4-2 in the first game when he injured his knee and was unable to return.

At second singles, Aryan Noticwalla defeated Warren’s Lucas Thrift, 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 3, Warren’s Brody Alexander defeated Rowan Wilcko, 7-5, 6-2.

“Brody continues to grab the big wins for us when we need them most,” said Pellegrino as Warren took two of three singles matches. “He was initially down 4-5 in the first, but clawed his way back into the set and never looked back. He moved well, served great and continued to pressure his opponent by approaching the net. This was a quality win from Brody and sealed the win for us today.”

At first doubles, Warren’s Jack Lynds and Ben Scott continued to shine in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Shaan Patel and Anthony Pellegrino.

“This was a great win for our boys and gives them plenty of confidence heading into the district events,” said Pellegrino. “They have now taken out every team they have been paired up against outside of (Cathedral Prep).”

In No. 2 doubles, Erie’s Alex Rose and Cooper Heberte defeated Jaxon Thrift and Colin Ellis, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

“Overall, we are really proud of these boys for fighting hard and laying it all out there for a win tonight,” said Pellegrino. “They have worked hard this season on a common goal and have completed the first step by qualifying for a spot in the finals. Now will come the hard part of avenging (an earlier 3-2) loss to McDowell on May 9 as they compete for a D10 title.”

Warren will hit the courts again Friday in a home match against St. Marys for senior night at Betts Park.

Starting at $2.99/week.
