Sheffield wrestling wins league opener on Tuesday
Despite just three matches on the mat, Sheffield’s wrestling team was handed nine forfeit wins in a 54-18 win over Coudersport on Tuesday at Sheffield Area Middle/High School.
“We had a lot of junior high matches,” said Sheffield coach Tom Holden. “Warren came along with Coudersport, so we got those kids a lot of mat time. Coudersport only had three varsity wrestlers; their 215 and heavyweight are both quality wrestlers that will probably be at regionals.”
At 172 pounds, Gavin Roesiner pinned Sheffield’s James Wagner “after a hard-fought three minutes and 53 seconds,” according to Holden.
Senior John Wright, a standout wrestler at 215 pounds, pinned Sheffield freshman Joby Hilyer in 45 seconds.
“It was a good effort by the outmatched freshman,” said Holden.
“We sent Starla Robertson out at heavyweight to wrestle Coudy sophomore standout Lucas Risner,” said Holden. “We bumped both Hilyer and Robertson up a weight class so we could get at least three matches. After that, it was a forfeit parade. The meat of our lineup never got a chance to wrestle.”
Forfeit wins went to Sheffield’s Jayla Woofter (107), Jenell Winters (114), Garrett Copley (121), Bryden Letendre (133), Hayden Holden (139), Michael Knapp (145), Alex Marfink (152), Zack Barnes (160) and Nevaeh Blake (189).
Sheffield is scheduled to wrestle at a tournament Friday and Saturday at Hickory High School.
