Warren takes second at Tri-County tennis tourney
SHARON — Warren’s girls tennis team finished second Wednesday at the annual Tri-County Tennis Tournament at Buhl Park.
“This is always the event the kids look forward to each year,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino. “It’s a fun day of tennis with multiple divisions so every player on each team has the opportunity to get varsity match play and contribute points for the team score.”
The tournament is split into eight divisions, which are Nos. 1-4 singles and Nos. 1-4 doubles.
At top singles, Warren’s Lucy Harrison won her opening round, defeating Greenville’s number one 8-3. After, she was paired up against Grove City and fell short in a tight match falling 5-8 in the semifinals.
At second singles, teammate Ella Card won her opening round 8-0 over Oil City, followed by an 8-4 victory over Hickory. In the final, she was paired up against Cathedral Prep, falling 7-10 and bringing home the runnerup trophy.
At third singles, Alannah Garza won her opening round 8-5 over Erie High, followed by a 8-1 win over Grove City. In the finals, she was matched up against Cathedral Prep and came out on top, defeating her opponent 10-3, bringing home the championship trophy.
At first doubles, the Warren pair of Maddy McDunn and Sarah Harvey won their opening round 8-0 over Sharon, followed by an 8-2 victory over Hickory in the semifinals. In the finals, they fell to Cathedral Prep 1-10.
At second doubles, the pair of Anna Courson and Grace Carlson won their opening round 8-3 over Grove City, followed by an 8-1 win over Greenville in the semifinals. In the finals, the pair was defeated by Cathedral Prep 3-10.
Warren had two pairs in fourth doubles; both had Lilly Seyler on the team.
“With only 10 players and three playing singles, they allowed Lilly to play on both fourth doubles teams, so everyone could play,” said Pellegrino.
Seyler and Sophia Davis kicked off the morning with a 6-3 win over Grove City, but fell in the next round 3-6 to a Hickory pair.
Seyler jumped right back into action with partner Brady Caudill and they made a run all the way to the semifinals. In the first round, they defeated a Hickory team 6-0. In round two, they took down another Hickory pair 6-0. In the quarterfinals, they pulled out a solid 7-5 win over Grove City. In the semifinal round, they were taken out by another team from Hickory 2-6.
“Overall, we were really pleased with today’s outcome,” said Pellegrino. “We usually come to this event with 20 or more girls and are able to grab points across all eight events, but with only 10 girls this year, we could only participate in six of the eight events. Everyone on our team was able to go out and contribute and grab us points to help our overall team score.”
Prep won 49 team points to Warren’s 28 and Hickory’s 27.
“This is now the third year in a row Cathedral Prep and Warren have finished 1-2 at Buhl,” added Pellegrino.
The District 10 singles championships are Saturday at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie.
