Warren falls at red-hot General McLane
EDINBORO — With the daunting task of taking its 0-6 record to 5-1 and unbeaten-in-region General McLane, Warren’s football team had to speed things up to hang with the Lancers’ quick-paced offense. Winners of six straight, General McLane pulled away in the second half for a 48-6 Region 6 victory over the Dragons.
“The kids played hard,” said Warren coach Cody Bupp, “but the speed was the difference. (Their) speed was on another level. The uptempo, speed, and execution shows they are a top team in the state.”
It didn’t take long for General McLane’s all-time leading passer, Isaac Zietz, to put the Lancers on the board. Three minutes in, the senior connected with Teige Berger for a 9-yard score and 7-0 lead.
After a punt return for a touchdown, Zietz again connected with Berger for a 21-0 first-quarter lead.
Zietz later hit Berger for a third passing score with two minutes left in the first half.
Warren would make a dent, and the Dragons did it through the air — quarterback Brady Shene’s and the Dragons’ first passing touchdown of the season. Right before the half, Shene connected with Chase Myers for a 10-yard touchdown and 28-6 halftime deficit.
In the second half, GM added three more scores, including Zietz’s fourth touchdown pass of the game and 28th in seven games.
“Our defense did a nice job making them work for passes down the field and (Scott) Nichols got a big turnover to stop their two-minute drill, and then, in turn, Brady (Shene) and Chase (Myers) hooked up. The kids executed our two-minute drill with no timeouts.”
