Warren posts tennis road win
ERIE — Warren’s girls tennis team defeated Mercyhurst Prep, 4-1, on Thursday at Frontier Park.
“This was a nice team win today in a competitive region matchup,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino.
At first singles, Lucy Harrison grabbed the first win for the Dragons by defeating Vanessa Jarmolowicz, 6-0, 6-1.
“Lucy controlled the pace in this match and kept her errors to a minimum, not giving her opponent much to work with,” said Pellegrino.
At second singles, Grace Carr dropped a tough three-set battle to MP’s Rory Brugger, 6-2, 1-6, 4-6.
“Both players played a great match with the best tennis coming in the third,” said Pellegrino. “Brugger managed to break serve at 4-4 and served out the final set, taking the match.”
Warren’s Ella Card defeated Khloe Kensill, 6-0, 6-1 at the third singles slot.
“We have been really impressed with Ella’s improvements lately and her shot selection,” said Pellegrino. “She plays very smart high-percentage tennis and it pays off in matches like these.”
The Warren pair of Alannah Garza and Maddy McDunn defeated Abby Koca and Payton Arrowsmith, 6-3, 6-2, at first doubles.
In second doubles, Warren’s Sarah Harvey and Grace Carlson defeated the pair of Quinlan Cullen and Addie Lauren, 6-0, 7-5.
“Both doubles pairs played well today and continue to improve each match,” said Pellegrino. “We have been testing out new formations, so it was nice to see some of those come to light in today’s match and pay off with some wins.”
Anna Courson was victorious in junior varsity play.
The Dragons (5-1 overall and 2-1 in Region 2) take on Grove City at 11 a.m. Saturday at Betts Park.
