Sheffield volleyball sweeps Forest Area on Friday
TIONESTA — Sheffield’s volleyball team improved to 1-2 on Friday with a 3-0 at Forest Area.
“We have tried so many lineups on varsity trying to see what makes us the most competitive team,” said Sheffield coach Melissa Lemay, whose Wolverines won 25-17, 25-9, 25-16. “This year is going to be full of growing pains as we slowly get our younger athletes and less-experienced upperclassmen acclimated to the faster pace of play from JV to varsity. It’s hard because, if this was just a regular year, you could look at our underclassmen and see what you have to build on and where you could get to in the next couple of years, but I’m afraid that with consolidation, we won’t have that opportunity.
“My son reminded me why Savanna (Cochran) and I decided to coach this last year,” added Lemay. “He said that we are coaching to give these athletes one more year to play together, since it wasn’t likely that anyone would have wanted to coach for a one-year tenure after having lost most of our starting lineup. I love them, and that is why I stayed, and Savanna has the biggest heart and loves Sheffield as much as I do… Whatever the win/loss record at the end of the season, getting to coach at Sheffield has been very special to me, and I am so proud of the program that we have built.”
In the Wolverines’ first victory, Emma Roell had 9 kills and 4 aces; Madison Connolly 11 assists and 4 kills; Katie Finch was a perfect 20-for-20 from the service line with 6 aces and had 2 blocks; and Emily Davidson had 9 digs.
Sheffield’s junior varsity also won, 25-17, 25-21. Peyton Heeter had 6 assists, and Sydney Barr added 3 aces.
A day prior on Thursday, Sheffield lost to Brockway, 12-25, 15-25, 18-25. Roell had 6 of the team’s 11 kills, and Davidson and Connolly each had 7 digs.
Sheffield’s JV won against Brockway, 25-22, 25-11.
