Lady Eagles volleyball earns win at Forest Area
MARIENVILLE — You didn’t need a calendar to know it was Friday the 13th.
In a wacky match full of back-and-forth momentum swings, the Youngsville Lady Eagles volleyball team emerged with a thrilling five-set victory over the Forest Area Fires at East Forest High School.
The hosts won sets one and three 25-21 and 26-24 while Youngsville won its three sets in dominant fashion, 25-13, 25-12 and 15-5 in the deciding fifth set.
“It might not have been the prettiest game we have played, but we battled and came through with a win,” said Youngsville coach Hannah Bulard. “Hopefully we can build off of this next week and get a few more wins. Things are starting to fall together for us. Earlier this week, we lost in five sets and tonight we won in five sets.”
The Lady Eagles (1-6) led the opening set 19-11 before the Fires raged back with 12 straight points to ultimately take a 25-21 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Youngsville allowed the first three points of set two before Madi Johnson took over and ripped off 16 consecutive service points to give the visitors a commanding lead. A resounding kill from Riley Robinault — one of her 23 on the night — gave Youngsville a 25-13 win and tied the match at 1-1.
Set three was a wild back-and-forth affair with Forest Area scoring 10 straight points after a 9-9 tie to take control of the set. Down 24-16, Youngsville sent Robinault to the service line and the junior clicked off eight straight points to tie the game at 24-24.
Unfortunately, back-to-back unforced errors doomed the Eagles and Forest won the set 26-24 and led the match, 2-1.
Avery Dalrymple was the star of Youngsville’s fourth set win. She served six straight service points to give Youngsville a 12-3 lead, forcing a Forest Area timeout. Before she was done, Youngsville led 19-3 and the Fires called a second timeout to try and slow the momentum.
It worked but only momentarily as Youngsville closed out the fourth set with a 25-12 win forcing a deciding fifth set to 15.
Three straight aces from Kamden Swearingen gave Youngsville an early 7-2 lead and the Eagles were up 10-4 when Forest Area called its final timeout. Moments later, Jayda Myers delivered a kill to finish the match and give Youngsville the 15-5 fifth set win.
Bulard was pleased with the effort of many of her players, including Grace First who delivered a superb game off the bench.
“Grace came off the bench huge for us tonight,” said Bulard. “She kept a clear head and did everything I asked of her.”
Johnson had 30 assists for the winners on Friday with Robinault adding 17 digs to her 23 kills and Alyssa Gentz, Rachael Lucks and Marli Rectenwald also reached double digits in digs.
The Lady Eagles’ junior varsity team also collected its first win of the season, 21-25, 25-16, 25-19. Maci Benton had four kills and three assists while Gabby Hodak and Desirae Merritt each finished with five aces.
Youngsville returns to action Monday when it starts a four-match homestand against North Clarion.
