Doubles pairs help Warren beat Erie
ERIE — Warren’s girls tennis team captured a 4-1 road win over Erie High on Thursday at Frontier Park.
“Erie has some really strong singles players this year, so the plan was for the doubles to get off to a hot start to take some pressure off our Nos. 1-3 early in the match, and they did just that,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino.
Kicking things off was Warren’s first doubles pair of Maddy McDunn and Sarah Harvey defeating Jordan Salamon and Autumn Sala 6-0, 6-0.
Warren’s second doubles pair of Grace Carlson and Anna Courson defeated Celeste Cole and Shelby Britton 6-1, 6-1.
“Both of our teams played great today and got us a nice 2-0 lead while the majority of singles girls were still early in the second set,” said Pellegrino.
Warren’s Alannah Garza picked up her ninth win of the season, defeating Arden Claudio 6-0, 6-0 at third singles.
Stepping in at No. 2 singles, Warren’s Ella Card battled through two highly competitive sets, pulling off the 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win over Eliza Borczon.
“Eliza is one of the best two’s in the district and this didn’t come easy,” said Pellegrino. “Ella remained patient and mixed up her shot selection and closed in on the points that mattered most when the sets got tight. This was a really nice win for Ella.”
Lucy Harrison played a strong match at top singles, winning the first set 6-4, but with it came a rolled ankle, according to Pellegrino.
“She tried battling through in the second, but after losing the second set (3-6), and having limited movement, we thought it was best to throw in the towel in this one,” said the coach. “Districts is right around the corner and, although she wanted to keep playing, we thought it was best to get her off court before more damage was done.
“This has been quite the year for us to say the least,” added Pellegrino.
“We are 11 matches in and have yet to play a single match this season with a full roster due to injuries and other factors,” Pellegrino said. “We are now down our top two players, but will continue to push through and watch the next player up step up and fill the role. I’m really proud of this team. Seasons like this are always tough and never expected, but the girls have remained positive week in and week out and someone has stepped up big for us in every match.
Warren (7-4 overall, 3-4 in Region 2) hosts Bradford on Monday at Betts Park.
