Warren girls swept by Prep in tennis

ERIE — Warren’s girls tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday, getting swept by non-region Cathedral Prep at Salata Tennis Complex.

“There is no way to sugar coat it; we simply were outmatched and outplayed today,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino of the 5-0 defeat. “Prep has a strong lineup from one to seven down and it was difficult to get any momentum going.”

At first singles, Prep’s Paige Patsy defeated Lucy Harrison, 6-0, 6-0.

Finleigh Handzel defeated Warren’s No. 2. Grace Carr, by the same score.

At No. 3, Sophia Glance defeated Ella Card, 6-1, 6-0.

At first doubles, Lili Beuchert and Margaret Prichard of Prep defeated Alannah Garza and Maddy McDunn, 6-0, 6-1.

At second doubles, Lydia Buchert and Katie Kuhar defeated Warren’s Sarah Harvey and Grace Carlson, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

“We were really impressed with our second-doubles team, though,” said Pellegrino, whose Dragons are 3-1 overall. “They made some adjustments after the first set and even took a 5-4 lead in the second, but just fell a bit short in the tie-break.

“We look to learn from this loss today and get back to work tomorrow as we need to be ready for our matchup with region champion Grove City Saturday at Betts (11 a.m.),” added Pellegrino.

LADY DRAGONS WIN

SAINT MARYS — Warren’s girls tennis team won its third straight match, defeating defending District 9 champion Elk County Catholic 5-2.

At top singles, Warren’s Lucy Harrison defeated Grace Ames 6-1, 6-0.

At second singles, Warren’s Grace Carr defeated Melena Piccirillo 6-3, 6-1.

Teammate Ella Card defeated Anna Biondi 6-1, 6-2, at third singles.

At fourth singles, Warren’s Maddy McDunn defeated Audrey Meyer 6-2, 6-2.

At first doubles, Warren’s Alannah Garza and Grace Carlson defeated Grace Ames and Melena Piccirillo 8-4.

At No. 2 doubles, the Warren pair of Anna Courson and Olivia Romanosky were defeated by the ECC pair of Anna Biondi and Audrey Meyer 8-0.

At No. 3 doubles, Warren’s Lilian Seyler and Brady Caudill were defeated by the ECC pair of Emma Depas and Lilly O’Connor 8-3.

“After sealing the match with four points from singles play, we elected not to repeat any singles players in doubles to give some of our JV players more varsity time,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino. “We were thrilled to have 10 girls in the starting lineup today and still come out on top with a 5-2 victory. It’s been a challenging few weeks with some players out with injuries and such, so it was nice to see the team come together tonight to grab another win.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
