Corry’s big 2nd quarter sinks Warren 42-6
CORRY — Corry scored 28 second-quarter points en route to a 42-6 non-region win over Warren on Thursday at Sheen Field.
The Beavers didn’t get on the board until late in the first quarter when quarterback Noah Carey connected with Keaton Frisina from 49 yards out.
Then the floodgates opened — with four touchdowns in eight minutes of the second quarter. It started with short rushing touchdowns from Nick Lesher and Lamech Albers and finished with two more long touchdown passes from Carey to Blake Cook and Lucas Baker, respectively.
Corry had a running clock, but the Dragons matched the Beavers with a touchdown each in the second half.
Lesher scored his second touchdown of the game from short yardage midway through the third quarter, and Warren scored its first touchdown of the season with 1:15 remaining in the game.
After two runs from freshman Ayden Corbett took the Dragons into Corry territory, sophomore Tyler Anderson kept his legs moving through would-be tacklers for a 32-yard score off of misdirection.
“Kids didn’t quit; proud of effort,” said Warren coach Cody Bupp. “(We were) right in the ballgame, forced some turnovers again, but also let some big plays happen and it got away from us before the half.”
Carey finished with north of 200 yards passing — 141 yards on three touchdown passes — for Corey (2-0).
“We knew they had playmakers on the edge, but we have to execute our assignments,” said Bupp, whose Dragons are 0-2. “That’s on me.
“It’s the reality of the situation (that) we have young kids still trying to adjust to the speed of the game and it is moving at a different speed,” said Bupp. “We are going to keep working; there is no one going anywhere. These kids have so much going on in their lives right now, and some don’t even know where they are going to school next year. We have eight more weeks to get after it and keep building.”
