Catching the best trophy pictures
Fishing the majestic waters of southwest Florida is about more than catching fish. Yes, that may be what you do during your charter, but what you are really after are the memories.
One of the best ways to capture memories for years to come is by catching your fish twice: once by hook and line, and once with your camera. Here are some tips to help you take pictures worthy of the adventure you are capturing.
1. Let the fish steal the day — I know the crew has been wonderful. The southwest Florida scenery is undoubtedly breathtaking. But the focus of your pictures should be the fish. Make the fish the star and save the rest for other in-between catch photos.
2. Start taking pictures before you land the fish — Landing the fish is only the end of the battle. In the days and years to come, you will want to remember the entire fight, not only the win. Have a companion start taking pictures while you are battling your future trophy.
3. Zoom in tight — Use your camera’s zoom feature to ensure the fish is depicted in close-up, lifelike detail. This will also help you focus on the fish and not distract stray seagulls, rods, or bystanders.
4. Remember to consider the sun — The southwest Florida sun is likely one of the reasons you visited. But its bright glare can make taking quality pictures difficult. Do not forget to position yourself and your trophy in a way that takes advantage of the sun. Have it over your shoulder in the morning for the best lighting. During later-day trips, reposition or use the flash to counter the bright natural light.
5. Let your pictures outnumber your fish — Every good angler knows your best fish is the one you have yet to catch. Likewise, the best picture is the one you did not take. Today’s digital cameras are capable of capturing hundreds of shots. Use this to your advantage. Take plenty of pictures, increasing the odds of getting the perfect memory.
Follow these simple tips, and your pictures and the memories they capture will be as vivid as the day they were taken. Every time you look at them, you will relive the fight and remember the wonders of southwest Florida.
