Tarp Skunks fall 6-5 to Doubledays

Auburn leads 6-1 early, holds on in ninth

AUBURN, N.Y. — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks made a run at it, but couldn’t come all the way back in a 6-5 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League loss to the Auburn Doubledays on Tuesday night at Falcon Park.

Auburn built a 6-1 lead in the sixth inning before Jamestown scored three runs in the seventh and one in the ninth inning.

The third-place Tarp Skunks fell to 4-3 in the West Division. The second-place Doubledays improved to 6-2 on the season, a game behind the first-place Batavia Muckdogs.

Jamestown had just four hits in the game, led by DJ Stoianovich’s (Mansfield University) two singles. Bobby Stang (University of Dayton) and Austin Matranga (Grand Canyon University) each added a single.

Klayton Kiser (Drury University), Stoianovich, Tommy Schroeder (Shorter University), Steven Scarfone (Clarion University) and Julian Sauger (Shorter University) each scored a run.

Benjamin Escobar (Xavier University) took the loss on the mound for the Tarp Skunks, throwing two innings while allowing four runs, four hits and four walks. He struck out four.

Shaniel Maldonado (Mercer Community College) threw four innings, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out six. Hayden Givens-Craig (University of Tampa) threw the final two shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.

Andrew Catron (Kenyon College) earned the win for Auburn, throwing five innings of one-run ball while allowing one hit. He struck out four and walked two.

The Doubledays pounded out 10 singles, led by S Mays’ three and Gavin Groppuso’s (Wingate University) two. Alex Sandell (College of the Holy Cross), Zach Bale (Chattahoochee Valley Community College), Logan Scully (Ithaca College), Thomas Salerno (John Jay College) and Cole Maucere (University of New Haven) each added one.

Jamestown returns to action tonight at Diethrick Park against Batavia. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. The Tarp Skunks will then travel to Batavia for a Thursday game before returning home Friday to host the Geneva Red Wings. Friday’s game is a Wegmans Community Buyout Game.
