Kinzua Wrestling Club posts summer schedule

The Kinzua Youth Development Center, home to the Wrestling Club, recently announced its summer schedule.

The center will continue to host KWC tactical-technical wrestling practices throughout June, July and August. High school and middle school practice will be on Monday and Thursday nights from 6-7:30 p.m. and youth practice will be on Wednesdays during the same time frame. The club will host “girls-only” practices on Tuesdays, beginning on June 18 and continuing through Aug. 13.

Special events will include the YMCA wrestling camp for boys and girls June 17-20 from 10-11:15 a.m. A Movement Education Camp will be July 8-11 from 10-11:15 a.m. for children under 10. Finally, there will be a girl’s “try it” camp July 15-17 for middle school girls, also 10-11:15 a.m.

The club is hosting its first coaching clinic for all youth, middle school and high school wrestling coaches on Tuesday, July 9 from 6-9:30 p.m. The focus of the clinic is the appropriate tactical-technical practices for preparing wrestlers at all levels. The clinicians include Dr. Dan McLaughlin from North Carolina, Michael Labella from New York and Matt Burlingame from Indiana (formerly from Russell, Pennsylvania).

Dr. Dan McLaughlin is a professor at Wingate University and a former Physical Education Teacher of the Year in North Carolina. He will discuss the importance of developing routines and demonstrate appropriate teaching and practice strategies needed for youth and middle school coaches.

Michael LaBella is a former Edinboro University wrestler who coaches at Massapequa High School on Long Island. He will conduct a presentation on the technical approach for youth wrestling, with a focus on the U-10 age group.

Matt Burlingame, former PIAA state place winner for Eisenhower High School will close the night’s activities. A former Virginia Tech collegiate wrestler, he went on to coach high school in Kansas and Massachusetts, before settling in Indiana. He served as head coach at Manchester College for several years. A student of the sport, he will share his top-10 secrets learned over a career that he considers essential for middle/high school coaches.
