Wolverines’ Hoffman breaks 28-year-old mark

Photo submitted to Times Observer Sheffield junior Sarah Hoffman clears the last hurdle in the 300-meter hurdles before she crosses the finish line and breaks the Sheffield school record with a time of 51.88 seconds.

SHINGLEHOUSE — Sheffield’s boys and girls track teams each went 2-0 on Monday with wins over Oswayo Valley and Otto-Eldred.

The Sheffield boys won 107-34 over Oswayo Valley and 107-34 over Otto Eldred. The Lady Wolverines — with a much smaller team — pulled off a 75-52 victory over Oswayo Valley and had a 68-66 upset win over a tough Otto-Eldred team.

If that wasn’t exciting enough, junior Sarah Hoffman broke the Sheffield school record in the 300-meter low hurdles set by Cari Sixt (Conlin) 28 years prior in 1996. Sixt’s previous record time of 52.03 was beaten by Hoffman’s new record of 51.88 seconds.

“She may not have won a hurdle event this evening, but that’s where facing tough competition can be the best recipe for success out there,” said Sheffield coach Jason Snell. “She ran both hurdle events with one of the best ranked hurdlers in District 9 in Addie Bell from Otto-Eldred and stayed right in her hip pocket giving all she had.”

That led to Hoffman qualifying for districts in the 300-meter hurdles, joining her high hurdles accomplishment from earlier in the season.

“I was on the track team when Cari was setting those hurdle records, so I had to reach out to her,” said Snell. “She was, of course, very happy for her and wanted us to congratulate Sarah.”

Hoffman was actually the overall winner in the 200-meter run at 30.06.

Freshman Madison Snell won the 100 meters (13.81) and the shot put (30-5). Freshman Katie Finch won the 400 meters (1:13.10), senior Emily Foster the high jump (4-9), sophomore Emma Roell discus (83-1), and junior Emily Davidson javelin (86-9).

The Sheffield boys were powered by a continued dominance and clean sweep of all three relays. The 3,200-meter relay team of Marc Lewis, Alex Eaton, Chase Kyler and Dylan Hardwick (9:23), the 400-meter relay team of Alex Marfink, Chase Fetzeck, Isaac Hammerbeck and Colby Barr (48.22), and the 1,600-meter relay team of Lewis, Christopher Joblon, Colby Barr and Hardwick (3.55.00), all won.

Individual overall double winners for the Wolverines were sophomore Hammerbeck winning the 110-meter hurdles (20.01) and 300-meter hurdles (48.57), junior Barr the 100 meters (12.03) and the 400 meters (56.66), senior Hardwick was the 800-meter winner with a new season personal best of 2:09.01, and senior Eaton was the winner of the 3,200 meters with a new season-best, breaking into the 11s with a winning time of 11:57.33.

“(It) was a great night for results, an amazing night for our program, and an even better night for memories,” said Snell. “I am so proud of Sarah. Her and Coach (Tommy) Hammerbeck have worked so hard together.”
