Warren rallies past Erie in baseball

ERIE — Trailing 6-1, two big innings led Warren baseball to a 10-8 comeback region win on Tuesday over host Erie High.

“It was a good bounceback and one we needed for sure,” said Warren coach Andrew Morrison, whose Dragons are 3-8 in Region 5. “We saw their same starter last Monday and he held us to one run. We went in with a game plan, knowing we would see (RJ) Hawkins again and knew we needed to be aggressive on early fastballs. It worked out really well.

“Brady (Berdine) and Aidan (Zdarko) had the two big hits with the three-run doubles, (and) both (hits) were smoked,” said Morrison. “The bottom of our order did an awesome job of setting the table; Eli (Snyder), Tage (Wyman) and Colin (Zdarko) have all stepped up as sophomores and continue to improve every game. It was great to see them all have big games; they have been working hard.”

In a six-run top of the fourth inning, Snyder led off with a double, Wyman added an RBI single, Felix Valencia singled and Colin Zdarko singled to load the bases. With one out, Berdine’s double over the center fielder’s head scored three runs. Wyman added his second hit of the inning for a 7-6 Warren lead.

In the sixth, Colin Zdarko singled, Eric Dippold walked and Berdine singled to load the bases. Aidan Zdarko’s three-run double to left-center field gave Warren a four-run lead.

“Aidan didn’t have his best stuff (on the mound) today, but he gutted it out and kept us in it,” said Morrison. “Konnor (Hoffman) did what he does and shut the door (in relief). This many games in a row is tough on our pitching, but that’s our strength.”

Hoffman threw the final four innings, allowing three hits and two runs, striking out four.

Warren did not commit an error defensively for the first time this season.

Offensively, Berdine finished with three hits, and Aidan Zdarko, Colin Zdarko, Snyder and Wyman added two apiece.

The game ended on a double play — a groundball up the middle that Hoffman deflected to Dippold (at shortstop), who stepped on second and threw to first.

Erie is 3-7 in Region 5 with its third straight region loss.
