Iroquois spoils Youngsville’s Senior Day

YOUNGSVILLE — Iroquois scored four runs or more in four of six innings and spoiled Youngsville’s Senior Day festivities with an 18-7 victory Tuesday at Youngsville High School.

The first four-spot of the night came in the top half of the first, however, the Eagles responded with a four-run outburst of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Youngsville seniors were responsible for all four runs being driven in during the inning.

With two outs, senior Madison Carnahan delivered an RBI single that scored Kamden Swearingen. After Ireland Abraham was hit by a pitch to load the bases, senior Vanessa Romanosky went to work on making her Senior Day as memorable as possible. Romanosky cracked a gap-shot double and, despite being thrown out at third looking for a triple, all three runs scored and the game was tied after an inning.

The next nine runs of the game went to the visiting Braves with a two-run homer from Neela Lamp and a three-run double from Karina Reichard highlighting that spurt.

The Eagles continued to fight, however, as the run that would’ve pushed the lead to 10 runs and the mercy rule was gunned down at the plate to end the top of the fifth.

The Eagles made sure the game would’ve continued anyway as the hosts plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.

With two outs, senior Molly Helman ripped a double and teammate Caitlyn Pikna entered to run for her. Carnahan reached on a dropped third strike and Abraham was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game.

Romanosky drew a bases-loaded walk for her fourth RBI of the day and senior Marissa VanGuilder was also hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for an RBI to make it 13-6.

Iroquois would respond with a five-run flurry in the sixth and despite Helman’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, the game ended via the 10-run rule.

Helman had a big night in defeat, finishing 3 for 4 with a double and a triple. Romanosky drove in four runs and Hailey Gray and Carnahan each scored twice.

The Eagles return to action today, hosting Saegertown.
