Six Dragons qualify for PIAA meet

SLIPPERY ROCK — Warren qualified for states in four events — six athletes in all — at Saturday’s Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association District 10 Class 2A track and field championships at Slippery Rock University.

Senior Laney Gatto finished second in the pole vault with an automatic state-qualifying standard of 10 feet, 9 inches. The top two in each 2A event Saturday, plus those who achieved the automatic state-qualifying standard, will move on to compete at this weekend’s PIAA 2A championships at Shippensburg University.

Gatto also joins Warren’s 400-meter relay team with sophomores Maddie Nosel and Lilly Newton, and junior Lindsay Madigan, which “ran a huge personal-best hitting the state standard to keep their season going,” said Warren coach Kevin Dustin.

Warren’s 400 relay was third at 50.36 seconds, surpassing the state standard of 50.80.

“(Senior) Kylie Fehlman … threw a huge personal-best in the javelin to secure her spot next weekend,” said Dustin.

Fehlman was second in the event at 112 feet, 4 inches.

“Lastly, after waiting all day to get the chance to run, (junior) Sam Lindell ran a strong and bold race to pull away from the field and earn his trip to states in the 3,200-meter run,” said Dustin.

Lindell was second in 9:56.52 — about 3 seconds behind Franklin’s Caleb Prettyman, who actually won D10 individual titles in the 800 and 1,600 as well.

“We had an awesome day,” said Dustin. “(I’m) so proud of everyone who competed. We ended the day with six kids going to the PIAA state championships, tons of medals, and a host of personal bests. Today is what makes all the rainy meets, cold practices and hours of work worth it. It was great to see the kids have so much success.

“Outside of the state qualifiers, we brought home medals (top eight in event) in the girls 3,200-meter relay (Morgan Alexander, Riley Evan, Newton and Brynn Norris), girls 1,600-meter relay (Nosel, Adison Cullers, Tori McMichael and Newton), and Morgan Alexander in the 3,200 meters,” added Dustin. “Lindsay Madigan (100-meter dash, triple jump) and Quinn Norris (1,600-meter run) also had personal bests with some big runs or jumps on the day. It was great to see everything come together on the right day for these kids. Great work by the coaching staff to get the kids ready and great work by the kids for competing at such a high level. Can’t wait to see how they do at the state championships next weekend. Great job, Dragons.”

Warren’s girls track team was Region 4 champion and finishes eighth out of 28 teams.

Also from Region 4, Eisenhower’s Emily Grosch earned a sixth-place medal in the 800 meters, and Rosalie Rondeau was eighth in the triple jump.

“We also had Joe Mistretta run a 51 in his 400 for sixth-place medal, and an impressive third in his 800 he was 0.08 seconds off of a state-qualifying time,” said Eisenhower coach Jimmy Schrecengost. “Also, Case Seymour was eighth in triple jump. It was a great year for our team and all our coaching staff could not be happier with their performance. We hope to improve even more for next year with everyone returning. … We brought a total of 16 kids, which is double from the last two years.”

For Youngsville, sophomore Ethan Beers topped an impressive freshman trip to the D10 meet with three more medals on Saturday. He was 1 inch from the automatic state-qualifying standard (21-6) in long jump, finishing fifth in 21-5. Beers also earned medals in the triple jump (sixth) and high jump (tied for fourth).

With Youngsville’s youth at the forefront, sophomore three-sport standout Riley Robinault finished fourth in jump at 5 feet, or 2 inches off automatic state standard.
