Youngsville suffers first loss of season

YOUNGSVILLE — Youngsville’s season goals remain well within reach.

However, in order to reach them, it will have to bounce back from a lopsided score they’ve grown much more accustomed to being on the other side of.

Saegertown put up crooked numbers in four of five innings and handed the Eagles a 15-3 Region 3 loss Monday at Davis Street Field in Youngsville.

“The score ended up about what it should have been,” said Youngsville coach Eddie Dorunda whose Eagles fell to 6-1 on the season. “We just didn’t come ready to play from warmups until the end of the game. Against a team like Saegertown, you can’t give up free bases and the first batter of the game was a walk and it spiraled from there.”

The Panthers put up three runs in the opening inning on a two-run triple from William Shaffer and another run scored on a two-out passed ball.

Youngsville quickly got on the board in its half of the inning as Matt DeSimone led off with a double and moved to third on James Johnson’s single. Nathan Lucks delivered a sacrifice fly to score DeSimone and make it 3-1, but a crucial second out on the bases handicapped the inning.

“We responded in the bottom half of the first but had a base running error and ran ourselves out of an inning,” added Dorunda. “It was just overall a bad day and one we need to forget about quickly and get right back to work.”

Leading 3-1 after two innings, Saegertown kept on hitting and taking advantage of the extra opportunities Youngsville provided.

In a three-run third, Luke Young had a two-run single and DeMarcus Manning added a sacrifice fly that allowed the lead to grow to 6-1. It was 11-1 after the top of the fourth when the Panthers got a sacrifice fly from Blake Burchill and four consecutive RBI singles from Blake Leslie, Young, Manning and Torre Mosbacher.

Saegertown pushed the lead to 15-1 in the fifth before Youngsville made one last-ditch effort to extend the game.

With two outs, Talon Mesel legged out an infield single and DeSimone completed his 3-for-3 effort with a home run deep to left center.

That was as close as the Eagles would get.

DeSimone’s three hits led the team with James Johnson adding two hits and David Manning and Mesel one each.

Youngsville returns to the field today when it travels to Cambridge Springs for another important Region 3 contest.
