Cathedral Prep senior Madison Simmerman two-hit Warren’s softball team in a 13-0 victory over the host Dragons on Tuesday.

She struck out eight over five innings, allowing only singles to Lily Devore in the second inning and Alana Stuart in the fourth.

Prep scored in every inning, including four in the top of the third and three in each of the court and fifth innings.

“Defensively, we looked a lot better,” said Warren coach Carissa Stuart, whose Dragons are 0-2 with home games the next two outings. “Alexis Jones made a nice double play in the first inning to get us out of a jam. Danika Abbey also came up with a couple clutch catches in left field.

“Lily Devore’s pitching has come along,” added Coach Stuart. “Mentally, a year ago, she wouldn’t have been able to finish the game, but she stuck with it and I have to give her props for that.”

Offensively, “the second time through the lineup, we started making better contact,” said Stuart. “We saw good pitching tonight, so now we know where we need to be by the end of the year.”

Warren’s junior varsity lost 15-0 in three innings.

EAGLES DROP TO 0-3

GUYS MILLS — The Youngsville Lady Eagles softball team fell to 0-3 on the young season after a 10-0 loss to Maplewood on Tuesday.

Hailey Gray was 2-for-2 for the Eagles and teammate Vanessa Romanosky also collected a hit for Youngsville.

Kamden Swearingen pitched well in defeat, allowing only three earned runs and striking out four in four innings. The Eagles’ defense committed some costly errors during the game that led to seven unearned runs.

Maplewood was also victorious in the junior varsity game. Rachael Lucks pitched well in defeat and Caitlyn Pikna had a double for the Eagles.

Youngsville returns to action Thursday when it welcomes Cochranton for a region showdown with the Cardinals.

IKE SUFFERS ROAD LOSS

COCHRANTON — Eisenhower traveled to Cochranton on Tuesday and suffered a 15-5 setback.

The Knights got on the scoreboard first when Payton Frank led the game off with a single. She would eventually score on Alana Byrd’s single to give the lady knights a 1-0 lead.

The lead would hold until the second inning. The Cardinals used the middle of their order to score four runs in the third inning, five in the third and four in the fourth inning to open up a 13-1 lead.

Eisenhower did not give up as they pushed four runs across in the top of the fifth inning. Frank drew a leadoff off walk. Julia Gesing and Tracey Jakubczack drove in runs, and Aliza Olsen tallied the final run, cutting the deficit to 13-5.

The Cardinals added two runs in their half of the fifth inning to close out the scoring.

Sam Childs, Riley Gafners and Kendra Danielson also had hits for the Knights.
