Warren slugs way to 1st win

Dragons beat McLane 18-6

WATERFORD — Trailing 6-0, Warren’s softball team exploded for 18 unanswered runs in an 18-6 Region 5 win over General McLane on Wednesday in the Dragons’ first victory of the season.

“It was great to get some runs on the board and get a good team win,” said Warren coach Carissa Stuart, whose Dragons are 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the region. “Everyone contributed offensively and defensively.”

The Dragons scored three runs in the fourth, nine in the fifth and another six in the sixth for the 10-run-rule win.

Alana Stuart and Malysia Sorensen had two hits each, including doubles, and Alexis Jones added two hits for Warren. Lily Devore, Peyton Hagg and Danika Abbey all had two-RBI hits late in the game.

Devore started in the circle and threw 1 1/3 innings. Sorensen relieved her in the second and got two batters to pop up to get Warren out of a jam.

Stuart slammed the door over the final four innings, striking out 10 for the win.

“We have to keep working,” said Coach Stuart. “There’s a lot of good teams in our region and we have a very young team. I’m proud of them today. They came back being down six runs. That’s not easy to do.”
