Warren baseball outslugs Meadville 9-7

MEADVILLE — Despite committing seven errors, Warren’s baseball team slugged its way to a 9-7 Region 5 win on Wednesday over Meadville.

The Dragons (2-4 in the region) scored in five of seven innings, including four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead. Warren scored twice more in the sixth to go up by three runs, 8-5, and held on.

“Really big win for us,” said Warren coach Andrew Morrison, whose Dragons lost 6-4 to Meadville on April 16. “This was a complete team win, which is what you need to beat a team as good as Meadville.”

After starting 7-0, the Bulldogs have lost three straight. Meadville is 5-3 in Region 5.

“Offensively, obviously, our best game so far,” said Morrison. “We knew we would get (AJ) Feleppa again; he’s their ace and a really good pitcher, but I think it worked to our advantage a little bit that we saw him last week, too. We made some adjustments, (and) eight of our nine guys had hits, which is great to see.”

Eli Snyder, Tage Wyman and Felix Valencia had two hits each for Warren, and Snyder, Konnor Hoffman and Aidan Zdarko reached base three times each. Zdarko had two RBI, and Brady Berdine and Valencia two runs scored apiece.

“Aidan and Konnor were both great on the mound; two really tough kids that kept their composure in some sketchy spots today,” said Morrison. “Aidan probably only gave up one barrel the whole game. Everything he’s throwing right now is moving. Konnor is really suited for that closer role he’s in. He fills the zone up and is just a competitor.”

Zdarko allowed five hits and two walks over 4-2/3 innings, giving up all seven runs, but none were earned.

“The defense was bad again, but we made some tough plays at the end of the game to close it out,” said Morrison. “Felix and Tage both made nice running catches in the outfield in the late innings, (and) Eli was awesome behind the plate.”

Warren’s junior varsity team also won, 2-0. Charlie Blum was the winning pitcher and Kriztyan Mancilla-Bertolami and Bradey Chase had RBIs for Warren.
