RUSSELL — The Eisenhower Knights were looking for their first win of the season Monday evening when they welcomed Cambridge Springs to Werner Park and nearly got it, eventually falling 6-4 in Region 3 baseball play.

Cambridge Springs leadoff batter Josh Gorton singled and stole two bases in the first inning, but Eisenhower’s Caleb Jakubczak got out of the inning when he threw out Gorton at the plate.

The game remained scoreless until the third inning when Cambridge Springs would push a runner across on Gorton’s single to take the lead 1-0.

The Knights had a chance to score in their half of the inning after singles by Shawn Pascuzzi and Johnny Palmieri ahead of a walk to Mason Degnan to load the bases. But the inning ended on a deep flyout for the knights.

The Blue Devils added another run in the fourth inning before the knights would get on the scoreboard. Senior Cole Kellogg led off the inning with a double and would later score on a single by Camron Jakubczak to close the gap to 2-1.

The Blue Devils had a huge fifth inning as they opened up a 6-1 lead. After a walk and a pair of singles loaded the bases, Matt Ross and Owen Riley both doubled to score three runs. A balk call on Eisenhower pitcher Derek Childs, who came on in relief of Caleb Jakubczak, plated another run to make it 6-1.

The Knights came right back in their half of the fifth with three runs of their own. With two outs, Degnan would double to deep left-center field and score on a Caleb Jakubczak single. Kellogg would take a walk before both runners would advance on a passed ball. Ayden Stiteler would drive in both runs on a single to left-center to make it 6-4.

Childs would strike out four of the last six batters for the Blue Devils, but the Knights could not get a run across to close the gap.

Degnan had two hits for the Knights and drove in a run. The Jakubczack brothers each had an RBI as did Stiteler.

The Knights return to Werner Park today when they welcome the Iroquois Braves. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
