3 Dragons named D10 all-stars

Hanson, Steinberg represent Eisenhower

In addition to being voted region all-stars by their respective league head coaches, Warren seniors Brady Berdine and Tommy Nyquist and Eisenhower freshman Austin Hanson have been named District 10 boys basketball all-stars, and Warren senior Sammie Ruhlman and Ike sophomore Clara Steinberg D10 girls basketball all-stars.

Erie Times-News’ staff picked 24 District 10 Girls Basketball All-Stars and 24 D10 Boys Basketball All-Stars “based on their performance from the entire season with special emphasis on the postseason and the coaches’ all-region selections,” according to the newspaper.

The D10 boys and girls basketball players of the year will be announced at an awards ceremony at a later date.

After its first D10 (4A) championship in 41 years, Berdine and Nyquist were named D10 Big School All-Stars. Multi-sport athletes, both will play other sports in college; Berdine to pitch at Gannon University and Nyquist to play football at Alfred University. Berdine averaged 22 points per game in three D10 playoff wins. Nyquist (9.5 points, 5.8 assists for the season) is a four-year starter at point guard for Warren who helped the Dragons win 67 games in those four seasons.

A D10 Small School All-Star, Hanson averaged 15.8 points as a freshman point guard for the Knights, who finished 21-6 with a PIAA 2A playoff win.

A D10 Big School Girls Basketball All-Star, Ruhlman is committed to D’Youville University for basketball, and she was part of two D10 titles in four years for Warren’s girls basketball team. A 6-foot point guard, she led Warren with 10 points per game and scored 17 in the program’s first-ever state playoff win, 71-64 over Elizabeth Forward.

Steinberg was named a D10 Small School All-Star by Erie Times-News after averaging 20.2 points in her sophomore season for Eisenhower. She has 774 points in 44 career games over two high school seasons.
