SHARON -- Warren senior Ryan Fitzsimmons and junior Adika Fiscus fell short of qualifying for states at the Class 2A Northwest Regional Tournament on Saturday at Sharon High School.
Fiscus, as a junior, won two matches and placed sixth at 114 pounds.
"To put things in a little perspective, Titusville and Corry -- who had put a pretty good beating on us this season -- only managed to get one wrestler to advance between the two teams," said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger. "Olympian Ken Chertow put it best, 'there are no guarantees that all of the hard work you put in will get you to your goals, but you will be ready when the opportunity presents itself. Just as in life.'"
The top four wrestlers in each weight class earned a place at the upcoming PIAA meet.
"Ryan (who was 0-2 at 121 pounds) was a great senior asset to his team through his leadership as a captain," said Baldensperger. "He was a key part of the two great come-from-behind wins we had this season. He will be missed next season."
"Adika (28-13 on the season and 2-3 on Saturday) has strived to get to the state tournament since I met him," said Baldensperger. "His freshman campaign was cut short with a season-ending injury. Last year, he was a match away from the blood round and this season, a 3-2 loss in the blood round to eventual third-place finisher (Rocky) Kowle from North East. I'm sure Adika will keep his foot on the pedal."
