Lady Eagles fall to Jamestown in D10 title game
MEADVILLE — Second place will have to do for the Youngsville Lady Eagles.
A season that eclipsed all expectations came to a close Saturday with a 39-21 loss to the Jamestown Muskies in the District 10 Class A girls championship game at Meadville Area High School.
“I want to congratulate the team on such a memorable season,” said first-year head coach Morgan Haibach. “Regardless of winning or losing, we still managed to make history for the girls basketball program. I am so proud of how far we’ve come in such a short amount of time.”
The Muskies jumped on the Eagles (7-16) with an 11-2 advantage in the opening quarter of Saturday’s game and never looked back.
Despite the tough start, Youngsville was able to close in by intermission and trailed just 16-13 as halftime came with Zaylee Cressley and Riley Robinault scoring four points each and Molly Helman hitting the team’s only 3-pointer of the afternoon.
While the final score ended up showing an 18-point margin, Youngsville was as close as eight points with just 5:35 to play before the Muskies closed the game on a 12-2 run.
“Although we didn’t win the game, we won by achieving goals that we had set in place from the beginning,” said Haibach. “This team achieved everything we set out to accomplish and so much more. Molly (Helman), Marissa (VanGuilder), Lynzee (Higley), Zaylee (Cressley) and Charleigh (Archuleta) have all laid the foundation for this program moving forward which is the most difficult task to accomplish. For that, I couldn’t be more proud. These five seniors have made such a remarkable impact on me and this program and I hope to continue their legacy moving forward.”
Cressley and Robinault finished with 8 points apiece to lead the Eagles. Helman added 3 points and Higley 2 more. The Muskies were led by the 14 points of freshman Ivy Riley and 13 from leading scorer Alayna Cadman.
