SHEFFIELD — Hayden Holden, Chase Kyler and Trenton Mead were the only Sheffield wrestlers to come away with victories Thursday evening as the Wolverines fell to Port Allegany 58-13.

Sheffield finished the season 4-1 in the Allegheny Mountain League, while the Gators improved to 5-0 to claim the league title.

“Right now, we’re focusing on cleaning things up and not making mistakes,” said Sheffield head coach Tom Holden of Hayden Holden and Kyler’s methodically paced matches. “You’re not going to dive in and force things. When you get a good wrestler, you get them out of position and take advantage of them. They both wrestled well.”

The win for Holden at 127 pounds improves his record to 27-10, while Kyler’s major decision victory at 133 results in the Sheffield senior finishing 23-7.

At 189 pounds, Mead, a senior, took an early 2-0 lead in the first, before Port Allegany’s Logan Hurlburt tied things up with a reverse with just under 20 seconds left in the period. Mead then turned his own reverse in the second into the Wolverines’ only pin (2:53) of the night. The win gave Mead a 23-12 record to end his final regular season.

The Wolverines are set to prepare for postseason action, as the District 9 Class 2A Championships are one week away, starting a week from today at Clarion University.

“We got a week of hard practicing now,” said Holden. “I can push these kids. We’ve had so many matches that I couldn’t push them to the brink of exhaustion the night before a match for two weeks in a row.”

Holden stressed that it was time to amp it up.
