YOUNGSVILLE — Warren took the short trip down Route 6 and made quick work of the Youngsville Eagles during a 58-6 victory in high school wrestling action Wednesday at Youngsville High School.
The Dragons logged eight first period pins in the 10 contested matches on their way to a dominant win.
The match started with the 152-pound bout where Warren’s Conner Zaffino downed Youngsville’s James Soltis in 1:50. Colby Zinger followed that up with a quick pin of the Eagles’ Carsyn Branstrom at 160 pounds.
Warren sandwiched a forfeit win in between two more pins at both 172 and 215 pounds. The Dragons’ Sebastian Oyola and Joey Krall were the respective winners in those matches.
“The boys wrestled well, having not competed since the 19th,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger, whose Dragons are 3-1 in dual matches. “Connor (Zaffino) got us started up with a fall at 152, moving up from 145. Colby Zinger made quick work of his opponent, pinning in just 21 seconds. This is Colby’s first year back since not wrestling since he was younger. Sebastian looked sharp as he continues to improve after missing last season with injury.”
Youngsville’s big bright spot on the night was the effort of Graeme Minnis at 285 pounds. Minnis was the first Youngsville wrestler to work into the second period and entered it down 2-0. Late in the second period, he escaped for a point and immediately took opponent Tyson Harkins to his back, recording the pin with just one second left in the period.
“In Tyson Harkins’ first year out,” said Baldensperger, “he looked like he is starting to figure some things out. He made a mistake at the end of the second and the Youngsville boy took advantage.”
After a pair of weight classes went uncontested, Warren got back to its winning ways.
Adika Fiscus was a winner at 121 pounds, Trey Carrington at 133 pounds, Cameron Williams at 139 pounds and Ryan Letko at 145 pounds. The only match to go the entire distance was between Warren’s Ryan Fitzsimmons and Youngsville’s Cole Johnson at 127 pounds. Fitzsimmons earned a 10-0 major decision victory.
“Adika (Fiscus), Trey (Carrington) and Cameron (Williams) all bumped up a weight to fill in for a vacationing Ethen Ringer and got their jobs done,” he said. “Ryan Fitzsimmons, also bumping up a weight, wrestled a competitive match with Youngsville’s Cole Johnson. Ryan Letko, also back on the mat after a year off, made short work of his match.
“Off to Tool City this Friday,” added Baldensperger.
Both teams return to action this weekend competing in Meadville’s Tool City Tournament.
