Sheffield bounces back with win over Oswayo Valley

Sheffield’s Colby Barr looks for an open man down low.

Sheffield now sits at 5-8 after bouncing back from a painful loss to Elk County Catholic last Monday to defeat Oswayo Valley at home in an up and down offensive game Saturday afternoon, 42-29.

“We missed a lot of opportunities at the hoop,” said Sheffield head coach Jordan Copley of the Wolverines shooting twenty-five percent in the win. “But nonetheless, we did what we needed to do to score more points and win the game.”

The Wolverines ended the first quarter up 15-7 with Dylan Hardwick scoring eight himself, including one beyond the arc. The offense stalled in the second, only scoring six points, however the defense held the Green Wave to three, maintaining Sheffield’s lead, 21-10 going into the half.

Once again in the third, the Wolverines would only put up six points, five of which were Leihden Wotorson’s. The defense didn’t fare as well as they did in the second, giving up 12, allowing Oswayo Valley to pull within five going into the final quarter.

“When you’re making those shots, it becomes easier to see the game and execute and do things you want to do,” said Copley. “When you’re not making those shots, it’s easier to pack the box. They kept it in for the first three quarters, and we weren’t able to hit those shots pulling them out and it made it tough on us.”

Sheffield’s Leihden Wotorson saves the ball as an Oswayo Valley defender goes out of bounds in a win over the Green Wave inside Ralph J. Santo Gymnasium.

Wotorson, Hardwick, and Alex Richards were able to combine for 12 of the Wolverines 15 fourth quarter points, while the Green Wave only scored two, giving Sheffield the win.

Wotorson led the Wolverines with 14 points, while Hardwick had 12. Richards finished with seven. Colby Barr was all over the court, four steals, ten rebounds, and multiple occasions where the junior was putting his body on the line to save the play.

“Colby is the type of kid that’s going to be committed to whatever he’s playing,” said Copley. “I’ll tell you what, he was committed today. He was flying around, going up for boards. I think at one point, he had four rebounds in a row. Big rebounds. Flying out of bounds by me, then next thing you know he’s sprinting by me. He’s all over the place. He does a great job.”

The Wolverines will host Johnsonburg on Wednesday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
