GROVE CITY — Sheffield’s Hayden Holden was seventh and Warren’s Adika Fiscus eighth on Saturday at the 41-team Fred Bell Tournament at Grove City High School.

That was Warren’s highest individual finish in the 41-team tourney won by General McLane. Penns Valley was second in the team standings and host Grove City third.

Fiscus, a junior wrestling up a weight class at 121 pounds, finished 3-3 overall. He won via technical fall in the first round, then earned a 2-1 decision to move to the quarterfinals. He lost by major decision to Central Valley’s Antonio Boni to get knocked to the consolation rounds. He earned his third win by major decision before coming up short in two straight losses by decision. He lost 7-2 in the seventh-place match to North East’s Rocky Kowle.

“The boys were coached this weekend, as I traveled with the girls (team), by Garret Smead, Dan Passcuzi and Brian Swanson,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger.

In addition to Fiscus for Warren, “Ryan Fitzsimmons, Trey Carrington, Cameron Williams and Ethen Ringer all went 2-2,” said Baldensperger. “We were without two starters this weekend (due to) injury or sickness. We seem to still be making fundamental mistakes, but the willingness to improve is there, so we will take that back to the room Monday and be looking to peak in the postseason.”

Holden finished 5-2 overall and pinned Pine-Richland’s Robert Hoy in the 127-pound seventh-place match after being decisioned by Hoy, 4-3, earlier in the tourney.

“Hayden wrestled well,” said Sheffield coach Tom Holden. “He is wrestling much cleaner matches as the season goes on. He seems to be making fewer mistakes. I am hoping he can peak at the right time for postseason.”

The Sheffield sophomore is 19-10 on the season and 39-22 over his first two seasons.

“As the day went on, it took more determination,” said Coach Holden. “He wrestled a lot of matches and showed heart. Come postseason, you have to be able to grind through several matches in a day. He showed he can do that, and he’s able to refocus after a loss.

“Trenton Mead had a tough bracket (189) and wrestled very well,” added Holden. “He was able to knock off one of the wrestlers on his ‘hit list.’ Ben Walter from Kane beat him in the Hickory tournament at the start of the year and Trenton absolutely dominated him this time. I think all of the guys are starting to put it together. We just have to clean up some mistakes.”
