Youngsville surrenders late lead in loss to Kane
YOUNGSVILLE — Kane scored the final 8 points of the contest, escaping Youngsville with a 42-41 victory Friday at Youngsville High School.
The Eagles had several close looks at the basket in the final seconds of the game, but the ball just wouldn’t find the hoop and Youngsville dropped to 2-2 on the season.
The visiting Wolves held a six-point lead after a quarter, but the Eagles came out hot in the second stanza, taking a brief 13-12 lead on a 3-pointer from Nathan Lucks.
Kane would respond with a 12-2 run over the next three minutes and change but five quick points to end the half from Brayden Baker and Rylan Benton left Youngsville down just 24-20 at the break.
Youngsville came out of the halftime break with arguably their best quarter of the young season.
A 9-0 run was capped by an Ethan Beers steal and score that forced the Wolves to take a timeout. Kane scored its first hoop of the second half with just a minute left in the third and the hosts led 33-28 heading to the fourth.
After a Cash Moore bucket made it 39-34 with 5:40 left in the game, the score remained unchanged for the next four minutes until Beers hit a shot that made it 41-34.
That’s where it fell apart for the Eagles.
A suffocating pressure defense and some timely offense helped spark Kane to an 8-0 run and the Wolves staved off Youngsville’s last second attempts to escape town with the win.
Benton finished with 13 points to lead the Eagles, while Lucks added 11 and Beers 8. Dane Anderson led Kane with a game-high 16 points.
Kane won the jayvee 18-15. Hudson Haight scored 12 points for the Eagles with Baker adding 3.
Youngsville returns to action Monday when it visits Maplewood.
