Sheffield falls to AC Valley

Times Observer Photo by Cody Elms Wolverines Austin Fiscus gets tough down low, in a 64-47 loss to the Falcons Friday evening inside Ralph J. Santo Gymnasium.

Leihden Wotorson brought Sheffield even with AC Valley with just over five minutes to go in the third quarter at 26 a piece, before the Wolverines were outscored 38-21 from that point on to falling to the Falcons 64-47.

“We stalled in the third quarter,” said Sheffield head coach Jordan Copley of the Wolverines’ four point third. “We weren’t able to get the looks we did in the first half. They made good changes and obviously that’s what dictates the game. I told these guys, it’s hard for us to play four quarters with the amount of guys we have, so we couldn’t let them take an extended lead in the third quarter and that’s exactly what we did.”

Wotorson had a monster first quarter, scoring 11 of the Wolverines’ 14 points, including two from beyond the arc. Wotorson dropped another three to end the second and keep the Wolverines within striking distance going into the half. Wotorson finished with a team leading 21 points, went three of four from the line, and pulled down five defensive rebounds.

Down 14-10, the Falcons were able to score 16 in the second on the shoulders of Jay Clover, who dropped in four baskets and two free throws. Like Wotorson, Clover too scored 21 on the night, leading AC Valley. Falcons’ Levins Zahsheen scored 14 while Brady Dittman totaled 12.

“The whole team plays with heart and hustle,” said Copley. “That’s what is keeping them in these games. I think numbers are inflated a little bit when we get down into these fourth quarters and we have to start fouling.”

Colby Barr led the Wolverines in rebounds with 11, while Dylan Hardwick had two, three assists and 12 points.

“The kids play hard, they work hard, we got to get better at executing, being disciplined and playing our style of basketball,” said Copley of the Wolverines shooting thirty percent from the field. “We got the looks. It’s just making them. Second chance opportunities killed us under the board with their big men.”
