All-stars

Warren, Ike volleyball players honored for outstanding seasons

Photos submitted to Times Observer From left are Warren’s senior region all-stars, Kylie Fehlman, Summer Lucks and Alexia Bowers.

The last time Warren had six volleyball all-stars was the last time the Dragons won the District 10 volleyball title in 2018.

This week, all three Warren seniors — Alexia Bowers, Kylie Fehlman, and Summer Lucks — plus juniors Maddy Jones and Lindsay Madigan and sophomore Madelyn Nosel were named Region 5 all-stars for the 2023 season.

Prior to being eliminated by North Catholic in the PIAA playoffs, Warren won 15 matches and was crowned the D10 3A champion in a five-set victory over Meadville. In addition, Lucks - who signed to play at Division II California University of Pennsylvania — broke WAHS’ all-time digs (1,414) and serve-receive (1,781) records. She had 568 in 108 sets played in 2023. Alexia Bowers – who is signed to play at D2 Slippery Rock beginning in the fall – finished the season with 267 kills and 526 for her career. Fehlman ended her high school career with 264 kills and 69 blocks this season. She had 637 kills and 206 blocks as a four-year starter at middle hitter.

The three seniors and juniors Jones and Madigan were also named to the Erie Times-News All-District 10 Big-School Team and, previously, to the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association (PVCA) District 10 AAA All-Stars. Bowers and Lucks were also named to the PVCA 3A all-state team.

Whew… That’s a lot of accolades.

Times Observer Photo by Steve Younger The Eisenhower volleyball team was rewarded with three players receiving all-region honors in District 10, Region 2. Named to the First Team was junior Caroline Smyth, above. Second-team honors went to senior Emilie Jones and sophomore Lainey Font.

“Getting so many recognized this offseason is definitely a tribute to how well the team did this fall,” said Warren coach Mike Dolan. “Top to bottom, from the assistant coaches to all the players in the gym every night, the hard work paid off with a terrific season and now so many players making all-star teams.

“Both outside hitters, Madelyn Jones and Alexia Bowers, had absolutely fantastic seasons, and complemented each other really well in that we always had such a great threat on the outside both in system and out of system. Both having great all-around games as well.”

Jones had 256 kills her junior year and has 436 in essentially two seasons, both with Madigan at setter.

“Lindsay Madigan just kept improving her setting every day, every week, every game,” said Dolan. “Her consistency with her set placement made everyone all the more confident in their attacking as the season went along. That along with her athleticism made her a force in the front row and at the serving line as well.”

Madigan finished with 925 assists and has 1,682 for her career. She had nearly 200 digs this year and served at a 93.5 percent clip.

“I can’t say enough about the up-the-middle defense provided by Kylie with such a physical net presence, and Summer in the back row digging up absolutely everything, not to mention firepower that Kylie brought to the middle position and the tough serving, passing, and out-of-system setting by Summer,” said Dolan. “Madelyn Nosel had so many memorable clutch attacks down the stretch in the big games toward the end of the season, but she was really good all year long playing on the right side, a brand-new position for her.”

Nosel had 205 kills in her sophomore year.

“As I said, these honors are nice for the whole team and program,” added Dolan, “and to have this many high-level student-athletes in the gym together for an entire season was really fun. It’s great that the seniors, all of whom have earned all-state nods in the last two seasons — Summer two times — led the way with these all-region selections as well as they have been amazing leaders, like coaches on the floor to the younger girls. They will pass down the awesome culture on the volleyball team to the underclassmen. I look forward to big things from the up-and-coming teams, but this team will definitely be one to remember for lots of things, not the least of which is having several of the top players in the state all together at once.”
