Lakewood YMCA hosts Merrill Lynch Tournament

LAKEWOOD, N.Y. — The Lakewood YMCA recently hosted the Merrill Lynch Tennis Tournament.

Thursday afternoon’s action started with the Rising Stars Junior Singles Division featuring 10-11-year-olds.

The top seeds out of the round-robin play were Jared Kang, Jeffrey Lin, Andy Dollard and Felix Mangeot.

In the semifinals, Kang defeated Mangeot 3-0 and Lin bested Dollard 3-0.

Lin claimed the championship by edging Kang 4-1.

Thursday afternoon’s action concluded with the Rising Stars Junior Singles Division featuring 12-14-year-olds.

The top seeds out of the round-robin play were Owen Graham, James Lin, Tyler Hatfield and Vivian Watson.

In the semifinals, Graham defeated Watson 3-0 and Lin bested Hatfield 3-0.

Graham claimed the championship by edging Lin 4-0.

In the High School Girls Singles prequarterfinals, Grace Kutschke defeated Maddie McDunn 6-0, 6-0; Grace Carr defeated Eliana Curcio 6-0, 6-1; Elise Riedesel defeated Anna Courson 7-6 (3), 6-3; Lucy Harrison defeated Alanah Garza 6-2, 6-2; and Izzy Heacox defeated Natasha Ferry 6-4, 6-2.

In the quarterfinals, Iris Kiehl topped Kutschke 6-0, 6-0; Carr topped Riedesel 6-2, 6-4; Harrison topped Mary Gerace 4-6, 6-3, 10-3; and Rylee Farrugello topped Heacox 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.

In the semifinals, Kiehl beat Carr 6-0, 6-1; and Harrison topped Farrugello 6-1, 6-1.

Kiehl won the title with a 7-5, 6-1 defeat of Farrugello.

In the High School Boys Singles quarterfinals, Alex Watkins beat Tobiah Reinard 6-0, 6-0; and Chase Haaksma beat Daniel Idzik 6-3, 7-5.

In the semifinals, Jack Sherry topped Haaksma 6-3, 7-5; and Watkins beat Noah Hardesty 5-7, 6-4, 10-2.

Watkins won the title with a 6-4, 7-6 (1) defeat of Sherry.

In the Men’s Open Singles semifinals, Thinus Marais beat Paul Stark 6-2, 6-2; and Eric Nickeson beat Tyler Griffin 6-1, 6-0.

Nickeson topped Marais 6-2, 6-4 in the championship.

In the Men’s Open Doubles semifinals, Nickeson and Stark topped Noah Hardesty and Phil Hardesty 6-3, 6-4.

In the finals, Nickeson and Stark beat Marais and Griffin 6-1, 6-2.

In the High School Girls Doubles quarterfinals, Harrison and Heacox beat Ferry and Garza 6-0, 6-4; and Erika Pickard and Kutschke beat Courson and Maddie McDunn 6-2, 6-0.

In the semifinals, Kiehl and Gerace beat Harrison and Heacox 6-4, 7-5; and Carr and Kelley Wood beat Pickard and Kutschke 6-4, 6-4.

Gerace and Kiehl won the title 6-2, 6-4 over Carr and Wood.

The tournament concluded with Open Mixed Doubles.

In the semifinals, Farrugeelo and Josh Erickson topped Daniel Idzik and Abby Idzik 4-1, while Carr and Elliott Striker beat Garza and Reinard 4-1.
