Kramer, JCC women sweep home swim meet

The Jamestown Community College women’s swimming and diving team moved to a perfect 9-0, including 6-0 in Western New York Athletic Conference meets, after topping Erie CC, Monroe CC and Genesee CC on Wednesday.

“It was great to see our men and women go out and race and be competitive,” said Jamestown CC head coach Todd Conklin. “Swimming the longer races is something that we haven’t done this year yet, and I thought the kids responded great to it; especially as most have never competed in those events.”

The Jayhawks started off the event in the women’s 400-yard individual medley relay, where the group of Madison Kramer (Falconer/Falconer HS), Lindsey Spitz (Jamestown/Jamestown HS), Paiden Wittmeyer (Stockton/Cassadaga Valley CS) and Stacey Blackler (Edenvale, Gauteng, South Africa/Edanvale HS) finished first.

From there, it was Ella Fosberg (Jamestown/Southwestern CS) bringing home a victory in the women’s 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 13:09:35.

Jamestown also took home the 200-yard and 50-yard freestyle swims, with Kramer claiming the 200 and Hayley Dawson (Papamoa, New Zealand/Tauranga Girl’s College) taking gold in the 50 by over 2 seconds in her first event with the team. Dawson’s teammate Shaylyn Owens (Delevan/Pioneer CS) brought home second for Jamestown CC in the 50.

Flipping over to the individual medleys, it was Wittmeyer clocking the fastest time there, too.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Blackler was back in first, winning the event with a 1:07:04. That was over 10 seconds better than the second-place competitor.

Switching to the backstoke, the Jayhawk ladies again put on a show with Kramer and Fosberg earning the top two spots in the 200.

Dawson had another fantastic outing in the 100-yard individual medley, where she took the top spot with a 1:15:27, almost 6 seconds faster than second.

The wins kept coming in the breaststroke, with Spitz and Blackler earning first and second.

Lastly, in the swim lanes, the 400-yard relay team of Dawson, Wittmeyer, Fosberg and Spitz brought home another Jamestown CC victory.

“We have added a few new swimmers on each side over the past few weeks, and to see them respond was great. Toby Gifford jumped right in and made some National cuts as well as Hayley Dawson,” Conklin said. “We have made a lot of cuts for the national meet already, and we have some swimmers right on the cusp. Really happy with where we are at as we get ready for our midseason meet at Cortland, where we will have a little rest and look for a great performance before the first half wraps up.”

Over in the diving pool, it was another great showing by Jayhawks’ Ashlynn Swan (Jamestown/Southwestern CS) and Owens. The duo took home first and third in the 1-meter diving events, respectively. Swan with a score of 174.90 and Owens 137.15.

MEN GO 1-2

A slew of newcomers helped the Jamestown Community College men’s swimming and diving team go 1-2 in their home meet.

The men took the water for the first time in the 200 freestyle where Steven Zentz (Dunkirk/Dunkirk HS) claimed a second-place finish in 2:09:52. Lukas Baer (Jamestown/Maple Grove Jr.-Sr. HS) took eighth in his first shot at the event.

In the men’s 50-yard freestyle, Jamestown took four of the top nine spots. Newcomers Toby Gifford (Frewsburg/Frewsburg CS) took second, Colton Schuman (Allegany/Allegany-Limestone CS) took seventh, Randall Hall II (Olean/Olean HS) took ninth and Rinat Kalimullin (Kazan, Russia/Boarding Lyceum NO. 7) took fifth.

It was another great group showing the 100 free with Gifford coming home third, Baer seventh and Hall tenth.

Zentz would notch a second-place finish in the 500-yard free.

Switching to the individual medleys, Gifford earned fifth, Kalimullin sixth, Schuman ninth and Hall 10th.

Lastly was the 400-yard freestyle relay, where Jamestown’s group of Zentz, Baer, Kalimullin and Schuman clocked in a second-place finish.

Next up for the Jayhawks is a trip to Cortland for the Snowflake Invitational Dec. 1-3.
