WATERFORD — This time they did it on the field.
It may have been cold and snowy, but Warren’s girls soccer team didn’t seem to mind winning the District 10 3A championship — 9-1 over Meadville — on the field Wednesday at Fort LeBoeuf High School.
It’s the first time sophomore Meea Irwin had a medal placed around her neck, and she earned it with three goals and two assists by halftime. Last year, Warren didn’t have a D10 playoff opponent so the Dragons advanced to states automatically.
“Tonight was a lot of fun,” said Irwin, whose Dragons led 6-0 at the half. “Winning for these seniors was great. (Eliza Brook), Marielle (Stanz) and Chloe (Sliter) are great teammates and leaders on the team. If we get up by a goal, Hailey (Peterson) is one of the best goalies in D10 and she will always keep us in the game. I couldn’t be prouder of the four seniors and their accomplishments.”
Meea added two more goals early in the second half to total five, Lucy Bigelow scored two goals, and Leyna Irwin had a goal and two assists. Teammate Lani Wenzel also scored a goal and Maggie Bennett, Brook and Stanz added assists.

“Getting the win meant a lot to the girls,” said Warren coach Mark Ordiway, whose Dragons are 9-9 overall. “We talked about the possibility of getting a district championship game versus Meadville (5-14) all season. Ending it this way puts a nice exclamation mark on our season.
“We have been playing extremely well late in the season,” he added. “Our midfield group of Eliza Brook, Leyna Irwin, Lucy Bigelow and Marielle Stanz continued their strong play this season and were in control of the game the entire first half. I will give credit to Meadville and their staff, though. I think they played better each time we saw them this season. I think that also shows how far we have come this season. Our girls have really put it all together as a team.”
It’s the third time Warren has defeated Meadville; the first two regular-season games were by 8-0 and 5-0 marks.
“Hopefully we can continue our momentum into next week’s state playoff game,” said Ordiway.
