Warren tops Erie 4-1 in girls tennis

ERIE — Warren’s girls tennis team topped Erie High 4-1 on Thursday at Frontier Park in its first Region 2 match.

At first singles, Iris Kiehl lost, 4-6, 3-6, in a hard-fought battle to Enisa Siljkovic.

“I think Iris played some great tennis today against one of the district’s top girls,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino. “This match really could have gone either way with both sets lasting an hour apiece.”

At the second singles slot, Mary Gerace defeated Riley Gloystein, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1. After saving three set points — down 4-5 — in the first set, Gerace fought back to grab the first set in a tiebreaker.

“After that, she was full of confidence and, with an aggressive approach, took over in the second,” said Pellegrino. “This was a great win for Mary.”

At three singles, Lucy Harrison defeated Mackenzie Bruce, 6-1, 6-0.

“Lucy dictated play with her forehand today and had her opponent all over the court,” said Pellegrino.

Warren’s first doubles team of Izzy Heacox and Grace Carr defeated Merisha Temang and Tristyn Righi, 6-1, 6-1. The second doubles pair of Natasha Ferry and Mackenzie Lester defeated Arden Claudrol and Bree Cornman, 6-0, 6-1.

“With great net play and solid serving, both pairs got to work quickly, capturing the first sets within 20 minutes of the match,” said Pellegrino. “This helped take some pressure off our singles girls and really set the tone.

“I’m very pleased with our performance today,” added Pellegrino. “Kicking off our region matches with a victory is always a great jumpstart to the season.”

Warren next plays at St. Marys on Saturday.

In junior varsity girls tennis play against Erie on Thursday, Warren’s Winnie Wolf, Kaelin Hatfield, Ella Card, Maddy McDunn, Alannah Garza, and Anna Courson all had wins.

Starting at $3.50/week.
