Sheffield volleyball bounces back in big way with win over Elkers

SHEFFIELD — Sheffield bounced back in a big way after their first loss of the year last Friday, by taking down the visiting Ridgway Elkers 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-8) in a volleyball match Tuesday.

Remnants of Friday’s loss still lingered early in the first set in Ralph J. Santon Gymnasium, as hesitancy on both offense and defense allowed the Elkers to close any lead Sheffield was able to build, however it didn’t take long for the Wolverines to find their groove and once again look like the team head coach Melissa Lemay knows they are.

“I think in the first set, we were confident, but not as confident,” said Lemay. “I think sometimes after a loss, you tend to think about those things and not forget about them. I think they were a little bit timid. A little timid in the first set, but then once we started scoring, we started getting more confidence.”

The Wolverines would again win the second set by 10 and were heading into the third looking for the sweep to get back to their winning ways. Sheffield would go down 0-1, only to build a 5-1 lead. The Elkers were struggling to return against the Wolverines’ aggressive offense, but were still within six points when Sheffield went on an 11-0 run to completely take over and demoralize the Elkers 23-6. Sheffield would give up two more points before putting the bow on the win 25-8.

“I think that these girls, again Friday was the exception to this, that these girls go out here now expecting to win, not hoping to win,” said Lemay. “That expectation, the more we win, the more they expect to continue winning. I told them all yesterday, we have the ability, we have the potential, to go undefeated the rest of the year, but we have to play together. No matter who’s on the court at any one given time, we have to play together.”

Kassidy Orinko, who recorded her 500th career kill last Friday, added 13 more against the Elkers. Orinko had two aces and seven digs as well. Kadence Steffan also had seven digs to go along with her two kills, and team-leading 25 assists.

“We love it when she hits,” said Lemay of Steffan, the Wolverines’ setter, getting two kills during last night’s win. “We all get super excited when she hits.”

The Wolverines travel to Dubois Central Catholic on Thursday. Sheffield defeated the Cardinals at the Brockway Tournament 2-0 (25-11, 25-23) early this season.

“That makes D.C.C. dangerous,” said Lemay. “They’re coming for us. They don’t want to lose to us again. So we just have to keep the pressure on and continue to play the way we know we can.”
