Sheffield records set by Barr, but Wolverines fall to Bucktail 74-42
Wolverines Colby Barr went to the air Friday night in a 74-42 loss on the road to Bucktail, throwing for a Sheffield single game record breaking 427 yards and six touchdowns.
“Preseason he set individual goals for himself and talked to myself and coach (Todd) Fitch,” said Sheffield Head Coach Mike Barr. “One was a pick-six, and two was to get that school record. Besides myself, coach Fitch had been his biggest fan and supporter.”
Barr was pleased that the team was able to simultaneously put together one of their best performances in several years and help their junior quarterback achieve one of his individual goals.
“I am truly Blessed to coach this group of kids,” said Barr. “Colby was talking to coach Fitch about the 1000-yard goal now. Colby works hard and I am very proud of him.”
Coach Barr and the Wolverines came into Friday night ready to forget the previous Saturday’s poor play, and regroup with milestones to reach throughout the game, hopefully leading to a better result.
We made some changes to personnel on the line,” said Barr. “We set a team goal of a first quarter touchdown and 30 points in the game. For the kids to basically quit trying to be perfect and play a football game. There was just a different attitude with them. It was a fun football game. Kids actually played for something, and each other. They wanted the record.”
Despite the new refreshed attitude, the Wolverines found themselves down early, giving up 30 points in the first quarter, all of which were on the ground. Brody Pentz and Brett Mason both ran in for 29-yard scores, while Braylon Fantaski and Tanner Pettingill touchdown runs of 45 and 30 yards.
But the Wolverines refused to quit, finally getting on the board late in the first quarter with a 48-yard pass to Austin Fiscus. Barr would also hit Hayden Holden for a 48-yard pass in the second, to pull within two scores. The two teams would then fire back and forth, with Bucktail’s Braylon Fantaski taking a 78-yard Pentz pass into the endzone, followed by Holden getting his second of the night with a 53-yard receiving score. Fantaski would score again, this time on the ground with a 24-yard run, only to be answered by Barr once more, this time hitting Dylan Hardwick for his first of two touchdowns on the night. The Wolverines outscoring the Bucks 21-16 in the second however was not enough to climb out of the early hole, still trailing 46-28 at the half.
Barr continued his record-breaking night in the second half, with touchdown a strike to Hardwick, in the third, and a 45-yard pass to Michael Knapp.
Holden and Hardwick were the main benefactors of Barr’s 427-yard game, with each eclipsing 100 yards. Holden finished with a team leading seven receptions for 169 yards, while Hardwick was close behind hauling in 11 passes for 156 yards. Holden also ran for 48 yards.
On defense, Holden and Alex Marfink combined for 25 tackles and a fumble recovery. Sheffield kicker Alex Eaton was a perfect six of six in PATs.
Coach Barr is adamant now that he has seen how efficient his offense can play, that they can take the next step in the program.
“Absolutely, we have seen and proved that we can perform at that level,” said Barr “I would say anything less is going to be a step backwards. The bar has been set.”
