Dragons post 4th straight tennis win
ERIE — “This was a great quick win in a hostile environment,” Warren assistant coach Mike Kiehl described on Thursday of the Dragons’ 5-0 girls tennis sweep over Mercyhurst Prep.
“This match was played at Frontier Park in Erie with Erie High and Fairview waiting to play their match directly after ours,” said Warren head coach Thomas Pellegrino, whose Dragons are 9-1 overall after their fourth win in a row. “These Erie schools don’t like us and they made that very clear today with three teams spread across the courts cheering against Warren. Unfortunately for them, they just added fuel to the fire and our girls didn’t give them much to cheer for, taking each match in straight sets and winning 60 games to Mercyhurst’s seven.”
At first singles, Iris Kiehl won, 6-1, 6-1. Mary Gerace won 6-0, 6-1 and Lucy Harrison won 6-2, 6-0 at second and third singles, respectively.
Izzy Heacox and Natasha Ferry won 6-0, 6-1 and Grace Carr and Mackenzie Lester won 6-1, 6-0 in doubles to complete the sweep.
Warren’s Winnie Wolf and Kaelin Hatfield won 8-4 in junior varsity play.
“We knew what was coming today by sharing the courts and having three Erie schools at the same facility, so the plan was to get the job done quickly and that’s exactly what our girls did today,” said Pellegrino. “We are now on a four-match win streak and plan to keep it rolling (today) as we take on St. Marys at Betts Park at 4 p.m.”
