FAIRVIEW -- Fairview broke a 7-7 first-quarter tie with four unanswered touchdowns en route to a 49-15 nonregion win over Warren on Friday at Fairview High School.
However, Warren's opening-drive touchdown was as pretty as it gets. Senior running back Tommy Nyquist returned from an ankle injury to carry 13 times for 38 yards -- much from direct snaps from the wildcat formation -- on that drive alone. He also had an 8-yard pass completion and capped the drive off with a 10-yard touchdown catch, contributing to 56 yards on a drive that lasted nearly 10 minutes and 22 plays.
Warren had an Eric Dippold touchdown pass called back due to an ineligible man downfield penalty, but the senior quarterback connected with Nyquist on the very next play. Unfortunately for the Dragons (0-5), they couldn't put anything else together until late in the third quarter. After 20 first-half carries, Nyquist slipped on the turf on his only second-half carry and didn't return to the field. Dippold's 52-yard touchdown bomb to senior receiver Johnny Corbett was the biggest second-half highlight in the loss.
Dippold, scrambling all night, was 19 of 26 for 217 yards with the two touchdown passes and an interception. He also recovered a fumble on defense. Corbett had six grabs for 96 yards, Chase Myers five for 50, Nyquist four for 41 and Matt Sowa four for 38.
Fairview outgained Warren 414 total yards to 266, and the Tigers (2-3) held Warren to negative yardage on the ground (-22) in the second half.
Much like Warren's first drive, Fairview ate up clock in the fourth quarter, culminating with Tyler Benford's second touchdown run of the game. He had more than 100 yards on the ground in the second half -- 171 for the game, and added a 43-yard touchdown reception to boot. Fairview quarterback Vincent Campoli had two passing and two rushing scores in the Homecoming game win.
"There's resiliency there; we're seeing kids battle back," said Warren coach Cody Bupp, "but we're still giving up chunk plays. … We answer a drive like that, and then two plays later, we give up a long run for a touchdown. So it's hard to get wind in their sails, but they continue to battle, and that's what we're going to continue to do."
