Damore shoots 72; Dragons still in 1st

ERIE — Warren’s boys golf team finished Thursday’s Region 6 Mega Match one stroke behind McDowell, but the Dragons remain in first place in the season standings and are guaranteed the top seed in the District 10 3A tournament in early October.
Warren senior Braddock Damore was medalist with an 18-hole 72 at Cathedral Prep’s home course, Whispering Woods Golf Course. After five complete mega matches, Damore has the top average 18-hole score (71.6) in D10 3A.
On Thursday, Damore’s 72 was four strokes ahead of second-place Tyler Allen of McDowell.
McDowell, one of Warren’s biggest District 10 3A challengers, finished first as a team Thursday with a four-golfer 323. Warren finished with 324 with Damore’s 72, Brady Berdine’s 81, Conner Zaffino’s 85 and Reid Olsen’s 86. Hickory was third at 337, Prep fourth at 340, Meadville had 352, Erie High 376 and Corry 462.
Warren is in first place in the Region 6 standings with 33 points over five complete mega matches. McDowell and Prep are tied in second place with 25 points each, Meadville has 23, Hickory 19, Erie High nine, and Corry six.
Warren hosts the final full Region 6 Mega Match on Monday at Blueberry Hill Golf Course, but the Dragons will compete Corry’s rain-suspended match later in the week.
The top 14 golfers by average in D10 3A — which is Region 6 — play on Oct. 2-3 in Meadville for individual title. The final two advance to the state championships.
The top two teams in 3A also play on Oct. 2 for the D10 team title. The winning team advances to sectionals the following week.
