JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – As of late Monday morning, Torrance, California was the only 2-0 team in the Babe Ruth 13-15 World Series.

The Pacific Southwest Region champion’s pair of wins both came in unpredictable fashion.

After winning on a walk-off wild pitch Sunday, Torrance converted a walk-off pick-off play Monday morning to beat Broomall Newtown, Pennsylvania 4-3 in eight innings of American Division action.

Broomall Newtown led 3-2 as late as the top of the seventh inning before Torrance rallied.

Tadashi Tiomico led off the seventh with a single off the glove of Broomall Newtown’s third baseman and then stole second. Anthony Guerra followed with a groundball to the shortstop, who tried to throw out Tiomico advancing to third, but the throw was late.

In Torrance’s eighth inning, Noah Gomez reached on a two-out single to center field and scored when Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Tsukasa Shimokawaji hit an RBI double to right-center field. Broomall Newtown escaped further damage when left fielder Jackson Burger threw out Shimokawaji attempting to score on Jacob Faamasino’s two-out single later in the inning.

Torrance’s Matthew Gonzalez, who relieved starter Raveen Nair to begin the fifth inning, earned the win. Broomall Newtown’s Donny Rieck singled up the middle to open the bottom of the eighth inning and went to second on Jack Quinn’s sacrifice bunt, but after a strikeout, Rieck was picked off second base when Gonzalez spun and threw to Guerra for the final out.

Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Austin Conaty threw a complete game with three strikeouts for Broomall Newtown.

Tiomico scored the first run of the game when he reached on an error, stole second and scored on Guerra’s RBI single in the second inning.

Torrance took a 2-1 lead in the fifth as Hasanuma walked, went to second on Jay Flores’ sacrifice bunt and later scored on Nori Mori’s RBI single.

Broomall Newtown took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Matt LaTour was hit by a pitch and Conaty was walked before both moved up on a wild pitch. Justin DiSantis walked to load the bases before a walk to Jackson Burger forced in the tying run. After a pair of outs with the bases loaded, Rieck hit an RBI single to give his team the lead.

Torrance (2-0) returns to action at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday against Opp, Alabama, while Broomall Newtown (0-2) takes on Eau Claire, Wisconsin, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
