Norwalk remains unbeaten after topping Moorhead
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – After briefly falling behind Moorhead, Minnesota on Monday afternoon, Norwalk, Connecticut quickly righted the ship.
Now, they’re the only 2-0 team left standing at the Babe Ruth 13-15 World Series.
Jacob Fields cruised through the first four innings, retiring 11 in a row before running into trouble in the fifth inning, and Antonio Marchetti secured the final six outs after the New England Region champions regained the lead as Norwalk beat Moorhead 4-3 in Game 11 at Diethrick Park.
Moorhead took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning, but Norwalk answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.
Mike Marini led off with a single before pinch-runner Ryan Laing stole second base. After a walk to Jaxon Ermo, an errant pick-off throw moved the runners up. Following a strikeout, David Harry walked to load the bases. Norwalk tied the game on a bases-loaded walk to Aidan Brehm and took the lead on another bases-loaded walk to Matt Rinaldi.
Marchetti took over on the mound with two outs in the fifth inning and induced a pop-up on the infield to get out of a bases-loaded jam.
Armed with a lead in the sixth, the right-hander faced the minimum over the final two innings, benefiting from Marini throwing out a runner attempting to steal in the sixth.
Norwalk led 2-0 right off the bat when Dylan Izzi walked with one out in the first inning and scored on an RBI double by Fields. Moorhead committed a throwing error on a flyout to right field, which allowed Fields – his team’s Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game – to take third base. He then scored on an errant pick-off throw.
Moorhead finally got to Fields in the top of the fifth inning. Jonus Schaumann reached on a fielder’s choice for the second out before three straight walks, the last to Jett Feeney forcing in a run. Norwalk stuck with Fields and the decision backfired when Moorhead pinch-hitter Brayden Kvamme hit a two-run single to give the Midwest Plains Region champion its first lead.
After a hit batter loaded the bases, Marchetti relieved and kept Norwalk’s deficit manageable.
Carson Heinsch was named Moorhead’s Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game after singling twice.
Moorhead is now 1-2 and will play its final National Division game at 7 Tuesday night against Portland, Oregon. Norwalk will take on Greenville, North Carolina in the 11 a.m. game Tuesday.
