Jamestown loses another heart-breaker
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Devin Hewes turned in one of the best performances thus far Monday at the Babe Ruth 13-15 World Series.
Unfortunately for the Jamestown Krusaders right-hander, his counterpart for Eau Claire, Wisconsin was even better.
Blake Bugher threw 6 1/3 innings of four-hit ball and two third-inning runs held up for the Ohio Valley Region champions, who beat the host team 2-1 at Diethrick Park.
Eau Claire improved to 2-1 and moved alone into second place in the American Division behind unbeaten Torrance, California, while Jamestown fell to 1-2.
Bugher retired the Krusaders in order in the third and sixth innings, and allowed just three runners to reach third base all night.
There certainly wasn’t a lack of drama late.
Trent Lewis reached on an error to lead off the top of the seventh inning and pinch-runner Carter Rizzuto went to second on Chase Haglund’s sacrifice bunt. Bugher then walked Blake Herman and Eau Claire turned to left-hander Evan Weiler out of the bullpen.
Weiler induced a groundball from Ashton Putney, but the A’s were unable to get an out on the play. Then, with the infield in, Weiler got another groundball and Kainz threw home to force out Rizzuto.
With the bases still loaded and two outs, Weiler got a flyout to right field to end the game.
The A’s scored both of their runs in the bottom of the third inning. Cashton Kainz was hit by a pitch to open the frame before Tyler Barrows hit a one-out infield single to the shortstop. Gavin Thompson then hit an RBI single to left field and Barrows ended up at third on a throw to home plate.
Bugher – the Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game for Eau Claire – then helped himself with a sacrifice fly to right field before Hewes got out of the inning with a strikeout.
Jamestown got its lone run in the top of the fifth inning. Haglund reached on a one-out infield single, stole second and went to third on a passed ball before Branston Lindquist eventually hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
Hewes — the Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game for his team — threw five innings off four-hit ball for Jamestown.
Eau Claire, which has the final off day in the division Wednesday, will take on Broomall Newtown, Pennsylvania at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. The host team will be off Tuesday before closing pool play against Torrance at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Jamestown likely needs Opp, Alabama to lose Tuesday and Wednesday to have a chance at advancing to the bracket round.
