JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Down to its final out Monday afternoon, Portland, Oregon refused to fall to 0-2 at the Babe Ruth 13-15 World Series.

The Pacific Northwest Region champion strung together three straight hits with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, eventually scored three runs, and then hung on in the bottom of the frame to beat Beekman, New York 6-5 in Game 10 at Diethrick Park.

Portland improved to 1-1 with the win while Beekman fell to 1-2 in the National Division.

Beekman led 5-2 after a three-run fifth inning before Portland battled back in the final two frames.

In the sixth, Paul Oellrich walked, moved up on a Roscoe Mithoefer single and a groundout, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.

After a pair of flyouts to start the seventh inning, James Gill III – Portland’s Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game – Silas Combs and Tino Flores hit consecutive singles. Oellrich then walked to force in a run and make it 5-4. Mithoefer followed with a hard grounder that hopped over the Beekman shortstop’s glove into left field allowing Combs and Flores to race home with the tying and go-ahead runs.

Brave Johnson took over on the mound in the bottom of the inning. Aidan Suarez hit a leadoff single and went to second on a strikeout when the pitch briefly got away from Portland’s catcher. Rich Brown then walked to put runners at first and second. Tristan Rivera then lofted a liner over the glove of Portland’s shortstop, but Oellrich made the defensive play of the game in center field when he fielded the ball and threw on the fly to third base to force out Suarez.

A double steal left Brown and Rivera at second and third, but Johnson induced a grounder to second base for the final out.

Portland led 2-0 after three innings. Johnson singled in both the first and third innings with Flores driving him in with RBI singles both times.

Beekman made it 3-2 in the fourth. Brown walked and Rivera was hit by a pitch before Casey Lowndes – his team’s Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game – singled. Christian Anderson followed with a sacrifice fly and Gianni Servidio hit an RBI fielder’s choice.
