PORT ALLEGANY — The Warren Dawgs picked up where they left off last season, with their top-ranked defense.
On a day where the offense could not put any points on the board due to several miscues, the Dawgs defense did the scoring and shut out the opposing offense.
Clayton Hammerbeck, Noah Pape and Chase Raub combined on a sack for a safety, after a Jeremiah Lyon punt pinned Port Allegany at its own 3-yard line. The defense caused three turnovers with a game-sealing interception by Hammerbeck and fumble recoveries by Lyon and Ryan Hilliard.
Only 50 total yards were allowed by the defense. Pape lead the team in tackles with 12 followed by Hammerbeck with eight, including three sacks.
The offense amassed 188 combined rushing yards led by Clay Cummings, Keegan Weissinger, Pape, Lukas Cope and a big run by John Nunez. Weissinger would add 29 yards passing. Cummings and Weissinger both had touchdowns called back due to penalties, which plagued the offense all afternoon.
The Dawgs are back in action Saturday at War Memorial Field for their first home game. They host Coudersport at 4:30 p.m. in a rematch of what last season’s championship game.

The Hogs offense rallied and drove down the field, capitalizing on a Ty Bryan touchdown run. Blake Peterson ran it in for the 1-point conversion to make the score 7-0.
The remainder of the first half was dominated by strong defensive play by both teams.
After halftime, the Tornados got the ball and once again fell flat, as the Hogs defense continued to hold strong. The third quarter was back and forth with several punts before forcing a fumble that was subsequently recovered by Peterson. A few plays later, Peterson ran it in from 3 yards out to put the Hogs up for good 13-0. The conversion pass attempt was incomplete.
